Rib-eye steak is a decadent cut that’s perfect for spoiling yourself. It’s known to be incredibly flavourful, a characteristic which comes as a result of the high fat content. Though a popular choice, the rib-eye is not as commonly found on menus as the rump, sirloin or even filet mignon. Here are six places in South Africa to find must-try rib-eye steaks.

Butcher Boys (Morningside, Durban)

Rib-eye steak is a speciality at this Morningside spot that is becoming increasingly popular with steak lovers. You can get it in a variety of sizes, starting with 200g (R155) all the way through to 1kg (R582). Choose to have your rib-eye with a variety of sides like chips, mashed potato, onion rings, baked potato or bone marrow. The steak gets a generous lashing of barbecue basting before being grilled to your liking. You can also choose to add on various toppings, including the recommended biltong and blue cheese, for R40.

Coobs (Parkhurst, Johannesburg)

Coobs has a beef steak cut of the week, and a rib-eye has just joined its ranks. Go for the 250g rib-eye for R215. Sides will vary depending on what’s seasonal, but at the moment you can expect deep-fried bone marrow, a crispy-fried quail egg, wilted greens and a barbecue or béarnaise sauce.
