Recreating the roasts of Sundays past with Gregory Czarnecki, Luke Dale-Roberts, Marthinus Ferreira and Richard Carstens

Are your family lunches old-school affairs with roast, potatoes and all the trimmings, or do you like to keep things fresh and modern? Four of the 20 chefs nominated for this year’s Eat Out Mercedes-Benz Restaurant Awards stepped back in time to remember the roasts of their childhood before creating their version of the perfect plate for Sunday lunch today.

Win two tickets to the Sunday lunch of the year

Want to be there on the day as we announce South Africa’s brand new Top 10 restaurants? Mblife is giving away two tickets to the 2015 Eat Out Mercedes-Benz Restaurant Awards at Mistico Equestrian Centre in Paarl on 15 November. You’ll be chauffeur-driven to the venue in a Mercedes-Benz SUV, with flights and two nights’ accommodation also included (if needed). To enter, simply watch the chefs prepare their Sunday lunch in the videos below and answer an easy question here.

Gregory Czarnecki produces a perfect roast bird with potatoes, charred onions and jus – a nod to long lazy lunches at his grandmother’s house.

Luke Dale-Roberts recreates the delicious messiness of the last few mouthfuls of a lamb roast.

Marthinus Ferreira recollects waking up to the smell of his mother’s cooking on a Sunday.

Richard Carstens crafts an updated Asian version of a classic roasted chicken.

Are you drooling yet? See nominated chefs Chris Erasmus, Wesley Randles, Virgil Kahn and Eric Bulpitt cook their version of Sunday lunch here (there may be roast goat involved), and the luscious ideas of George Jardine, Peter Tempelhoff, Chantel Dartnall and Michael Broughton here.
