Owner's description

For a unique dinner experience, book a table at ’Augusta’s African Kitchen’ with its focus on Cape Table cuisine. Augusta de Mist has fragrant herb, vegetable gardens, fruit trees and a small olive orchard. At the Kitchen they create and roast their own Masala blends including Ras-el-Hanout, Cape Masala, Kenyan Masala, Durban Masala and good old SA Curry Powder. They also make their own Harissa and even Za’atar. A small selection of Jams, Pomegranate Reductions and Spice Mixes are for sale when available.

Hands-down the best food in Swellendam and some of the best in the Cape. We discovered the restaurant after our guests also stayed at Augusta and loved the dinner. They went on about it so much that we decided to get away for the weekend and booked dinner as well. We were not disappointed. Its hard to describe the whole thing - suffice to say that the many courses are very well conceived and very well presented.
I must just point out that everything on the plate is created in the kitchen and this is perhaps what really sets Augusta de Mist apart from everywhere else. The puff-pastry, sweet pastry, quiche pastry, samosa pastry: all homemade. The breakfast croissants (yeasty, buttery) & breakfast baguette (crispy crust, soft interior): all homemade. Muffins, herb rolls, rusks, jams, chutneys, harissa, kimchee: all homemade.
They also do an annual red wine blend (from Mischa Estate available stocks) which they blend themselves to their taste and as can be expected: delicious.
Cannot rate this restaurant highly enough.
Footnote: you have to be a guest of the guesthouse to have dinner (not really a big issue as the guesthouse is stunning, and in itself, the best place in Swellendam.
It is a set menu so take note - notify the guys if you have a special dietary request.
