Tshepang Molisana

Opposite the bright and jovial surfer’s huts on Muizenberg Beach, Bootlegger Coffee Company is roughly the size of a large wardrobe. The words ‘Stand Up’ are both a call to action and a simple dining instruction. A simple menu and an uncomplicated drinks offering encourages diners to briskly order their pastry and beverage and enjoy their handheld fare while watching the waves crash onto the shore.

Pint-sized people pepper the doorway, soft-serve in hand. Besides soft-serve, the menu is strictly takeaway and largely consists of pastries that are best washed-down with a Bootlegger’s Coffee. Two thick slices of banana loaf comprise a single portion, served at R39. A savoury delicacy, the Quatro cheese muffin consists of cream cheese, cheddar cheese, mozzarella and feta. Served slightly heated, the generously sized muffin is displayed in a bell-jar alongside Pain-au Chocolat, at R30. Soft-serve is available in a sugar cone or eco cup for R20, the dessert can be enjoyed with the added panache of a Belgian Chocolate Flake or Salted Caramel Bits as optional extras.

Cape Town native, Bootlegger Coffee Company confidently sells capsules priced at R79. The coffee company has good reason to be confident about their coffee. A rich cappuccino, with light, frothy milk is but one of their exceptional coffee offerings. Albeit it compact, the coffee menu offers great variety. Order a powerful espresso, a spirited honey nut latte, or even a red cappuccino with the option to add soy or almond milk.

Both as cool as the Atlantic and as warm as beach sand. The barrister and attendant are both generous with suggestions such as ‘visit our other branches where you can sit down in the restaurant’. The team also helpfully wipes up spilled milk froth, while effortlessly attending to a growing queue of diners.

Sandwiched between Knead and Lucky Fish & Chips, the tiny café is almost like a passage. This dark and aromatic passage is frequented by beach-goers and surfers, it is filled with laughter, coffee-cups stacked high and freshly baked goods.

Best for...
An unmatched opportunity to enjoy the splendor of the ocean. The restaurant has replaced its plastic straws with paper, offers simple food and is footsteps away from one of the world’s most popular surf spots.
