Nelleke Elston
Walking into the grain mill, you have the distinct feeling of discovering a hidden gem. Tucked away in a quiet corner of the town centre, this laid-back owner-run café is first a spelt grain mill, then a café. In addition to a variety of spelt products, various pastas, organic vegetables and locally sourced products are for sale.
Food
Most dishes incorporate the bakery’s delightfully light spelt bread or rolls. Breakfast is not to be missed, with the signature continental breakfast and omelettes giving you all the energy you need to start your day. Crispy Flammkuchen (German-style pizza) made with a spelt base is on offer with delectable toppings such as goat’s cheese, walnuts, caramelised beetroots and crème fraîche, or a vegan option with olive tapenade, mushrooms and grilled vegetables.
Other menu items include generous burgers, spelt pastas and seasonal salads, with various vegan options using locally sourced organic produce as far as possible.
Drinks
A huge variety of organic tees, great quality coffees and freshly squeezed juices are on offer. Hibiscus and ginger water kefir, green tea kombucha and various herbal tea infusions make up the drinks menu.
Service
The staff are warm but professional and knowledgeable about the various spelt products for sale.
Ambience
The atmosphere is laid back and rustic, with a fireplace burning on cold days. The terrace is shared with a trendy homeware store, so it’s the perfect place to enjoy a mid-shop drink and spelt apple strudel or date and cocoa ball. The enclosed terrace makes it child-friendly and a perfect place to enjoy the sunshine in winter or summer.
Best for…
A lazy breakfast shared with friends, or a lunch stop between browsing boutique shops.
