Owner's description

The Maximillien restaurant in the Legacy Corner Mall at the Nelson Mandela Square in Sandton aims to take cuisine to new heights with new executive chef, Sylvester Nair. With a burning passion for cooking which was ignited as a child, Chef Sylvester always knew a great dish when he saw it. A designer of flavours and composer of tastes, he has been in the kitchen since the age of nine, mastering the craft of creating delicacies to relish with his father - respected internationally renowned chef, Luke Nair. Learning from the best, Chef Sylvester is today applauded for bringing back old school cuisine with a modern twist.

Tried out their date night. Was an awesome treat. Lovely mussel and clam chowder or venison carpaccio to choose for starters. Both were really good. The mains were choice of beef fillet, gnocchi or lgrilled line fish. We both opted for the beef filler, was cooked perfectly, just didn't enjoy the barley which came with it as a side, as was a bit dry. Desserts were a delectable selection of tiny cakes to share, lemon meringue, chocolate éclair, choc mousse and a vanilla sponge, they were super tasty. And bonus a bottle of either red or white wine to share. All in all, a great night out, even with some live music.
My husband and I have visited the Maximillien Restaurant at the DaVinci Hotel in Sandton on numerous occasions because of the relaxing yet stylish atmosphere, the outstanding cuisine and the special personal touches that enhance the experience of dining out. It is a testament to return to a Restaurant time and time again when there is a multitude of Restaurants to choose from in the surrounding areas alone! The very first time we visited I was exceptionally hungry and the warm, garlic rolls was a treat. We ordered starters and I have returned for this dish numerous times, the Seafood Chowder. It is rich, chunky and the abundance of seafood is an absolute joy. I was perhaps a little over-eager in ordering the dish as a starter because it could easily be a meal on its own. Our waiter, Oscar recommended the slow-cooked Wagyu Oxtail and I asked for a side dish of mashed potato. Braised to perfection. I could not finish the generous helping. We had the best Cappuccino's to end a perfect meal. Highly recommended.
Although the restaurant has a wonderful setting and fantastic ambience, the food was overall disappointing. Duck pate was served from a commercially-bought bottle. Vegetables were tasteless and overcooked. Our instructions in terms of cooking our meat were completely ignored. Wont go back there.
