Owner's description

Named after a favourite Miriam Makeba song, this is a good place to hear South African live music, eat fairly typical cuisine, couched among easy burgers and salads for the more wary. From soups to the best steaks, it is alI good fare. I also think it is the best place to broach mogodo, a very South African tripe dish, the favourite of almost all local families.

The area is marvellous for visitors to join South Africans having fun and the restaurant epitomises the atmosphere, especially in the evenings when it has a Sophiatown of old (and Miriam Makeba did live there), nostalgic vibe.

It's a nice place to cheer up... And listen to a south African music.
Being a Maboneng resident, I spend most of my weekends exploring my neighbourhood and trying out all the various hidden places. I have been to Pata Pata 3 times and on all three occasions have been appalled by the service and food. My partner and I were looking to enjoy our evening with a few cocktails and a nice meal however we now find ourselves sitting at home as the experience was once again so disappointing. I initially ordered duck, but was told it was sold out, then opted for a burger, that I could not even eat as it was very old and the chakalaka had obviously seen better days which explained the sour taste it left in my mouth. My poor hubby who was dying for a curry ended up with a watered down not so fresh chicken curry that did nothing to curb his craving. Over and above all that the staff are having their own squabble that was so loud it got uncomfortable for us as patrons. I love Maboneng but will never go back to Pata Pata again. It is the only place I have had an issue with even after giving it 3 tries. I would not recommend it to anyone. Really disappointed.
My first time at Pata Pata was a very horrible experience especially the food, I was recommended to the place and I looked forward to it as they spoke highly of it. I remember I ordered well done lambchops with salad and gosh it was bad, the chops weren't just well done, they were burnt beyond recognition and I must say never again am I going there. Thing is it wasn't mine alone but also a friend I was with who ordered the same. We were shocked
Walked past on a Saturday evening and the energy coming from inside was amazing so we had to stop. even after two hours half the bar was dancing and everyone was having a great time. The service was great, considering all that was going on. Highly recommended on a Saturday. Best time we've had at a restaurant.
Pata pata (Maboneng) judge you by ur appearance. We get here by 2 for a birthday celebration, if the order is not slow, its wrong nd thn aftr all tht we are told to move to another table as the one we sitting at is reserved and they had assumed we'd be gone by four. Like really ! This is worst place ever !!! Neva setting my foot here
