This last Sunday, I had a arranged a surprise lunch for my fiance at this fabulous restaurant. From making the booking, I was treated with exceptional customer service. Upon arrival and the afternoon spent we were treated to the greatest service, fantastic food and wonderful setting. Bernadene and Michelle were running between our massive table of 18 and a wedding next door but never slipped on anything. As we are frequent visitors to Franschhoek, this will be a choice to visit again in the future.

This was the most disappointing meal I have had in a long time. The calamari in the calamari salad was frozen and processed. The chef walked out on his job halfway through the meal.

This must be one of the best located restaurants in the Franschhoek winelands, with tables overlooking lush green vineyards and towering mountains. On a summery day, with a light breeze wafting through the vines, it was like a small piece of heaven. The staff welcome was very friendly and a blackboard type menu was presented as soon as drinks orders were taken. The menu is very limited, which is probably intentional to not overtax the kitchen, who we thought was on the slow side. A restful bucolic scene - so who cares about slow service? Tiny little breads served in miniature clay pots so reminded me of the “blikkie brood” that I grew up with. Absolutely lovely simple bread – Delicious! On the menu where 4 simple salads, at an average price of R55, and 4 main-food-group mains at an average price of R115. It did not make sense that a main chicken dish was the same price as 3 of the starter salads. My calamari salad was packed with fresh crunchy lettuce and tender, well cooked calamari. It was very generous and very tasty salad indeed. The chicken Dijonaise was a stout dish, served in a fashion rustic with huge potato and a stodgy acidic sauce. Even the largest appetite could not leave dissatisfied after this type of hearty dish. We had a lovely, casual and enjoyable lunch and left feeling totally stuffed. That bread really hit the spot. My personal preference would have been for the jazzy Frank Sinatra to be replaced by Edith Piaf, who I think would have been more in character with this type of restaurant. The location makes up for any culinary shortage.
Having read a review of this establishment, I decided to give it a bash. I arrived for lunch on a Wednesday, great start no booking registered - luckily quite a few tables available. What a disappointment, the most uninspiring menu I have seen in a while. We opted for the picnic basket hoping for some variety, what a let down. Woolworths pre-packed would have been a lot cheaper and maybe a lot tastier.
