Sagewood has a great menu filled with interesting and different flavour combinations. The breakfasts are where Sagewood really shines, but the pizza is a delicious option too. If you just want a tea time snack, Sagewood's bakers' table offers a variety of delicious freshly baked goods straight from the oven. Sagewood's staff are friendly and the ambience is relaxed. All of this combined makes Sagewood one of the best dining experiences in Pietermaritzburg.
I attended a private function at the Sagewood Cafe on Saturday 23rd October and was extremely impressed by the whole set up. I moved from Pmb. to the Cape 4 years ago and Sagewood Cafe was under a different name and management so I didn't know what to expect when I arrived at the familiar venue but different team. I found the service very good and friendly, the food out of this world, and Michelle very kindly did a takeaway especially for my sister who was unable to attend having just had a big operation. Thank you. Highly recommend this super eatery.
Just what PMB needed! A restaurant with actual good food. The sunday buffet was simply amazing! Modern spins on classic dishes. Melting roast pork and roasted green beans with cherry tomotoes and balsamic was excellent! Service needs some work though.
Maritzburg has never been known for its restaurants. Having just returned from living in Dublin with its incredible food, my expectations were low for my home town of sleepy PMB where most restaurants look onto parking lots. Sagewood Cafe was a very pleasant surprise. Charmingly decorated, and located in a beautiful nursery and with a deck looking over a river, this is somewhere where one wants to sit, chat, and drink tea for hours. The food is fantastic, so much so that I have returned three times in the past week. I highly recommend the vegetable tart from the baker’s table. The thin based pizzas are also fabulous, with interesting combinations of toppings. I am also happy to report that there are plenty of options for vegetarians. They also seem to be catering for the Tim Noaks fanatics with carb free this and that, cauliflower pizza bases and such. This is, however, not a place I recommend for those of a diet, as resisting a dessert from the freshly baked cakes and pastries on the baker's table is quite a feat. Importantly, this place has great coffee. The only downside to the experience on all three occasions was the service. On two occasions the wait staff were inattentive, which could probably be explained by the fact that the place was humming, but should call for better organisation by the management. On the last occasion we experienced a waitress who was just plain rude. Luckily for Sagewood Café however, this was not enough to put me off the amazing food, which I plan to return for again soon.
