This is many a Joburger’s favourite picnic experience. The baskets you get for keeps and contains cheese platters, of course, showing off the delicious and unusual cheeses produced here, meat platters, farm-type pickles, olives, bread and biscuits, fresh fruits and cinnamon-sweet Dutch cookies.

Children get theirs packed in cute little knapsacks (R70). For further entertainment there’s mountain biking and cheese tours but you get an allocated piece of the Skeerpoort riverbank and picnickers are only too delighted with that. There is built-in concrete seating further into the lawn area but most people take blankets and stuff down to the bank. The restaurant is fully licensed and drinks can be obtained there or, if you bring your own bubblies or wines.
