My stepson is a full time student and works 4x a week as a waiter at a local restaurant. The management recently changed their policy on feeding waiters when they work long evening shifts. All their waiters now have to pay and order from the menu. He obviously need to pay for his meal out of his tips, which means that on a quiet night he comes home with hardly any profit after spending at least 7 hours working. Is this common policy in Cape Town? It does not seem ethical to me!

I am a correctional officer.Im working in the prison kitchen as a cook. Before this I use to work in the mess for 14 years as a caterer or food worker. This is our description of a chef. There is no time to sit down to eat when you busy.We are serving breakfast and A la Carte style menu, a braai restaurant. When you eat you living on chips and bread. You never ever get really hungry. The smell of the food took away the hungriness. Its likely that all or most of the kitchen staff operates the same when it is eating time. When there is function we cater for set menus and normally you have a take away, well not for me but for my wife and kids.LOL

I worked at Jordan restaurant, amongst others, and chef George often treated us to roasting a whole ribeye to make the most amazing battes, aka baguette sandwiches. We also got to play with the wood fired oven and made our own pizzas. This was mostly in the winter months when business was not booming as usual. During busy times, which was pretty much permanently, one poor commis or student would be designated the feeding the masses who gave him hell, constantly. Good fun!
