Lovely little local place with hip decor and spectacular phyllo pies. We used to live in the area and went back for a lamb pie this weekend. Happy to say they're as good as ever!

In 2015 this was one of, if not my favourite breakfast/coffee spots in Cape Town. It’s been going downhill, seemingly since one of the ladies managing the kitchen left. The service and value-for-money started to deteriorate before the revamp, and after trying it a few times since reopening, it only seems to have become worse. This Sunday morning at peak breakfast time, it took us (2 people) 10-15 mins to get service, 10-15 mins to get our first coffee, and our food order was wrong, despite being taken twice. We were lucky getting out of there within 40 mins though, because there were multiple irate tables around of us with service and orders very delayed or wrong, with somebody explicitly not tipping, and what looked like a walkout. Such a shame given how cosy and well positioned this is place is. I don’t think it’s the fault of the staff so much as it seems to be understaffed and no clear management of the kitchen or service. Please make an effort guys. You’ve got to deliver better.
What a lovely little spot! The sun streams into the narrow space in the afternoons, the glowing wooden shelves are stocked with jams and little treats. I tucked into a roast chicken sarmie on rye - sounds simple but the chicken is free range and it felt very wholesome. I see they now have a burger menu too - will be back to try those out!
A hidden gem, Tamboers Winkel is absolutely the best of the Kloof St cafes, especially at breakfast time when the weather isn't spectacular. The coffee is consistently excellent, and the service is as warm as it comes for this part of town. The French Toast is really special, but the freshly-baked croissants are also wonderful as is the standard scrambled eggs + bacon. It's also a great place for a low-key dinner with 3/4 friends. They currently have a Friday-night winter special serving 2 good-sized bowls of chunky beef and vegetable stew plus a whole bottle of Nymphomane red wine for R180.
Cosy, comfortable neighborhood place. Food is great and affordable. Best chicken pie anywhere!!!! Service is friendly and personal. Don't miss out on Wednesday evening wine tastings. One of my very favourite places in town.
