Food
Families flock to Deer Park Café in Vredehoek for the lovely lawns, alfresco tables and affordable café fare. Comfortable café-style food is the order of the day. The butternut panzerotti is one of the standouts: Pasta pockets filled with sweet morsels of butternut in a creamy, but not absurdly rich, sauce. There’s also a simple chicken sarmie on tasty Turkish bread, and a burger on good ciabatta with crunchy pickles.

A blackboard menu offers some more bespoke options; there’s a salty, tangy pork adobo with fresh coriander, and a healthier salad of broccoli, bulgar and chorizo.

For dessert, tuck into one of the gourmet ice cream lollies from Las Paletas, or sample one of the cakes; there’s usually even something gluten-free to be had.

Affordably priced breakfasts, meanwhile, include classics of croissants with scrambled eggs or eggs florentine, plus some special options. There’s oats and quinoa with toasted almonds, poached fruit and honey, and gluten-free waffles with mascarpone and berry compote.

Deer Park Café also offers a kiddies’ menu, with options around the R40 mark. Think spaghetti bolognese, toasted cheese, and chicken fillets.

Drinks
In addition to the wine options, there’s craft beer, Fiery Dragon Ginger Beer and kombucha to be had.

Service
Staff are relaxed and used to kids roaming around. It can be tricky to get their attention, however.

Ambience
Deer Park Café has a wonderful, relaxed atmosphere that’s perfect for a sunny day. It’s very popular with young families, so if you’re not a fan of chubby toddlers or wide-eyed infants, perhaps it’s not the place for you. If you do have kids, though, it’s a rare gem. The large grassy play area has several jungle gyms, and is fenced on all sides. There’s one high chair (first come, first served) and even better, they have changing tables in both the male and female toilets. Cue applause.

  • First time at this restaurant and it was amazing. It has spectacular food - perhaps the best in CapeTown. I would highly recommend it to all my friends and family and I just cannot wait to go back, for another Sunday lunch!

  • I took my girlfriend here after being recommended by friends. I wish I had found this place earlier!!! Awesome, relaxed ambience and even better food! The pork vindaloo was probably the best curry I ever had and my girlfriend's butter chicken was equally impressive. The chilli popper starters we had were brilliant as well and I honestly think I could eat 20 in one sitting as they taste so good. The service was quick and friendly too, this is possibly the most underrated restaurant in Cape Town. We will be back :)

  • Recently we were a few days in Cape Town and ended up in the Deer Park Cafe. Here we had a nice dinner, including lamb, vegetarian dishes and salads. The homemade cake was sublime. Everything was equally tasteful and well cared for. Friendly and attentive service. Children are very welcome here. The card has several children's meals. A fireplace, terrace, play area, great views and good relationship between quality and price of the food makes this restaurant well worth a visit.

  • Good experience for our group of eight. Interesting spread of dishes. Shared with salads. Recall cauliflower samosas and paneer masala. Excellent pork vindaloo. Have had best yellowtail special here before. Did get noisy.

  • We totally love this place. We've been coming here for years to enjoy the relaxed family oriented atmosphere and delicious, mostly vegetarian dishes. Their food was always good and has even improved over time. The vegetarian burger is DIVINE! The tomato and lentil soup is heavenly! All the veggie foods are fabulous and well thought through. The pretty park next to it welcomes kids and doggies and is ideal for parties. The service is always loving and friendly. My son had his 16th birthday here and the Deer Park staff made sure it was very special. Thanks Deer Park people

  • The breakfast was Amazing! Ordered the extra portion of bacon (expensive) but sooo delicious. Worth it! We thankfully booked - as it got very crazy very quickly. Service was very friendly although a little slow. The kids ran around outside in the park with their Las Paletas lollies while we tried the 2 different coffees on order. Still undecided about which is my favorite. Will definitely come back for dinner (didn't know they had so many nice wines on offer) !..... - and to try the cake.

  • Upon arrival at what we thought would be an enjoyable Sunday afternoon experience, we were greated (or rather not greated as there were no staff to help us to our table) with the incompetence of the staff, the loud noise and the terrible food.

After finally being seated at our table and ordering our drinks, only half the order came. We then had to request the remainder of our original order which took some time. Upon the receipt of the balance of our order, we placed our food order. About an hour after our food order was placed we were told that our food was now being prepared and it would be less than 10 minutes. 20 minutes later we still had not received our food! We were then told for the 2nd time that they were now preparing our food. When our food finally arrived we were met with undercooked potato wedges, hardly any lettuce that was cutt so small you needed a spoon to eat it and chicken mayonnaise that was overpriced for what we received. Then after complaining we were offered coffee's on the house. But not to our surprise one of the coffee's had a long hair in it.

So to sum up a disappointing lunch, the place was unhygienic, the staff were incompetent and we were lied to. All in all we will not be returning nor would we recommend it.

  • Seemed as though the staff were running around like headless chickens on a Sunday. We waited for while to be seated only to be told there was a waiting list to be seated outside, only to witness a couple strolling in and jumping the so called "waiting list". 5 minutes to be handed a menu is far too long and not be allocated a waiter is also not cool. 15 minutes later with left....you clearly dont need our Randelas

  • Food is overpriced for what you get. Venue is fantastic for children but there were dogs running all over the place, very unhygienic. Not sure whether the restaurant has a policy against animals or not but it is still a restaurant. Not impressed at all when the dog took a dump in the flower bed right next to a table where food is served. Management should really revise their thinking of hygiene for the patrons.

  • With its great play park, it really is a lot of fun for the kids and a favourite for children's parties. But I find the menu prices just too high for a casual lunch and coffee. The kiddies toasted sandwiches were over R30 the last time we were there, and chicken pie came in over R70. It can also get quite noisy inside with the sound bouncing off the walls. Having said that, it remains a great option for a bit of play, especially on a lovely day when adults can sit outside.

  • I love this restaurant - great breakfast, lunch or early dinner. It remains one of my favourites with so many interesting options on the menu. Lovely for breakfast with the kids or guests visiting Cape Town, elegant lunches or a fabulous early dinner. I always feel there is something new and interesting. Excellent and friendly service, exciting food (why eat out for the ordinary) and a truly lovely setting. Friends from the City Bowl to guests from further shores are always deeply impressed with the Deer Park Cafe experience! Highly recommended!

  • I had heard so much about the restaurant, so when deciding on where to go for my birthday and knowing there would be kids joining I popped in to have a look around. Noisy and relaxed, perfect for kids! I booked two tables to make up 20 people. As it happens this was reduced to 13 people. I had met the party planner when I was in to book and had been particular to have the table near the window so that there would be space by the couches for the kids. When we arrived we were told that the table had been given to someone else. I explained to the waiters that we had specifically asked for that table and after some juggling we were able to get it back and were settled before my guests arrived. I then had the unfortunate experience of meeting the manager or owner (I am not sure what she was). Aggressive and abrupt, she came over to our table and turned a mistake that had been made by her staff into be our issue.
I strongly believe that there is always a choice on how you speak to people and she could have easily handled the situation by explaining the mistake in a pleasant manner, and asked kindly if we would be okay to move later when the double booking arrived. I am not unreasonable and would have been absolutely fine with it, the time difference would have been more than enough for us to enjoy a relaxed breakfast and if we wanted to linger we could have just moved to the couches for coffee. It was all about approach and hers was awful. Twice during the conversation she even gave me a "whatever" answer, something I would expect from a snotty teenager, not a grown professional woman. I eventually just asked her to walk away, that she was just upsetting me and that we would be gone in time. Quite honestly, it was not about the mix up they had made with our table or our booking. I would have quite gladly been accommodating as I know mistakes happen. It was her aggressive and rude approach that was most upsetting. So ultimately, lovely food, great location and perfect for families. I just feel that when you are in a customer facing profession or position, you need to make sure that you have a pleasant demeanor about you in order to handle and resolve mishaps to reach amicable outcomes.

  • I ordered a glass of wine, thinking it would be within a reasonable price range as the restaurant seemed very low key but when we got the bill, I was given a R40 glass of wine and I had two glasses. R80, I could have bought a bottle some where else. Shocking, no wonder the restaurant is always empty after the moms and kids have gone home!

  • We decided to have my daughters birthday party at Deer Park Cafe - what a perfect setting! It is totally stress free, The kids played outside in the park all afternoon, and the adults were able to relax, enjoy coffees, iced tea and some delicious snacks prepared by the cafe. The staff are very friendly and accommodating, and helped to make the day a success.I would highly recommend Deer Park Cafe, whether it be for a meal, a place to chill or a party. Hannah (my daughter) thoroughly enjoyed her party and the huge bonus was not to have to worry about tidying up afterward. Thanks Deer Park Cafe for a wonderful day.

  • I have been to the café on a number of occasions and really enjoy it. However, when I last went in May, the young blonde waitress who served us had a major attitude and became very aggressive when we did not offer a 10 % tip. I understand tipping to be discretionary and based on the service - it certainly is not expected - and this experience has left me feeling less inclined to return. This is no judgment on the whole establishment - one individual behaving badly must be put into perspective - but I certainly wouldnt wish that amount of waitron aggression on anyone.

  • I had lunch today at Deer park cafe with a friend. The waitress who serves us was very friendly and offered me a drink immediately. She explained the specials and made recommendations (which is good for me cos I dont like reading menues). We both had lentil burgers even though we are not lentil heads! The burgers were served with chips and roast vegetables and was garnished with fresh corriander. The plate was well presented from an aesthetic point of view. I chose this restaurant to eat at today because I enjoy the ambiance and view of the park.

  • I love the place because my son can play to his hearts content while I soak in a little sun. The waiters are always friendly and efficient and I have never had a problem with food. My thoughts are, if you give a friendly smile, chances are youll get one in return. As for the Botox faced Moms...??? Never noticed them, I am not there to see who has Botox and who doesnt. Great Place!

  • Every time I have eaten here, the service is lousy. Having waited for service for 30 min, the waiters get extrememly irrate when you call them over. When you eventually get your food, its not great, and the coffee is awful and mostly cold. The only nice thing about this restaurant is the fact that the kids can play in the park - and the view!

  • If snotty faced kids, and precious, pinched faced moms are your thing, then by all means, try this place. Youll love it if you enjoy cold coffee and luke warm, soapy hot chocolate and youll simply move in if you have a penchant for indifferent service. Unless youre breeding little Tarquins and Lilly-Skyes and you botox your face into a static glare, stay well away, because youll only end up gagging the way we did.

  • What a beautiful setting the deer park cafe has but what lousy and boring service we had today. The male waiter we had looked completely bored with his job of taking our order. He brought our food and drinks in drips and drabs, with this emotionless face. Not once did he ask whether he can get us olive oil or balsamic vineagar for my salad. I eventually got up to get it myself as the atmosphere in the cafe was such that you rather did not complain. The ??manager saw me get the olive oil, just staring at me and carrying on with bringing out his cakes. No one ever asked whether we are happy with our food....all we had was someone bring the fod and take empty platesa away. What a pity. Would love a reposnse from the owner.
