Food:

This Joburg culinary landmark is a lot more than just a steakhouse. There are plenty of options for those who don’t like their flesh red, including Loch Duart Scottish salmon, chicken in all guises and a host of veggie options. The starter menu is deliciously retro with items such as deep-fried camembert and snails in Pernod and garlic. Try the Izimbambo Zemvu, which is simplicity itself: plain salted lamb riblets and neck cooked to perfection with succulent, fall-apart fat and flesh. Meat is king here, aged well and cooked to perfection.

Wine:

An extensive and well-thought out wine list, though prices can be steep and mark-ups high. If you want good bang for your buck, then choose one of the Pick’s Pick wines. A merlot made by Gary Jordan at Jordan Winery will set you back R147 as will a cabernet sauvignon from Paul Cluver. The whites in the collection are priced around R117 – all of which are superb value for money.

Service:

The serving staff are extremely well informed and helpful.

Ambience:

The large interior has dark wood panelling and green hues. One dining area captures the butcher shop feel thanks to the clever use of stark white tiles.

And...:

You can also buy meat to prepare and cook at home at the establishment's boutique butchery, which is open until the restaurant’s closing time.
