Kong Sing, which apparently means ‘bright star’, is indeed bright, in the sense of being a well-lit, large, L-shaped restaurant. Most of the tables are spacious and round – suited to family eating – and the menu is lengthy. There is an outside terrace, with sweeping views, but you have to be a smoker or at least smoke-tolerant to access it. There is a dim sum menu populated mostly with buns – delicate and trembling steamed ones containing prawn and pork, or crispier fried ones with cabbage, garlic and chives. Both are served with a spicy soy sauce. The menu also has extensive options presented under the categories of chicken, duck, pork, seafood, vegetarian and beef mains, some sweet and sour, some sizzling, all either with steamed rice or noodles. If you find the choice somewhat baffling, simply go for one of the set menus.
Wine:The wine list, like the menu, is long, comprising bland usual suspects, but well priced, rarely exceeding R150 per bottle.
Service:Quick, conversant in English, friendly, no frills.
Ambience:Spacious and decorated in an uplifting colour scheme of red and white, never completely full (except on Sunday at brunch) and very family friendly. Small children can run around without raising an eyebrow.
And...:The food can be counted on to be dependable, if unimaginative. (KH, September 2010)
