Food
Chef Pieter Vlok’s food is not easily defined: he fuses influences, ingredients and fla-vours from all over the globe, from Asia to the Mediterranean, often threading the dishes harmoniously with his signature South African touch and taking care to source local as far as possible. Breakfast and lunch menus offer uncomplicated bistro fare in generous portions. Breakfast offers a variety of options, from smoothies, muesli, fruit and yoghurt, to French toast, bacon, eggs and sausage. Coffee is great and the freshly baked bread excellent. (Banters forget about counting carbs; the dinner rolls are a must!)

Lunch options may include soups, salads and their potato omelette. The warm squid salad is a symphony of flavours with greens, radish shavings, bean sprouts, coriander emulsion, black sesame seeds and wasabi mayonnaise. Pork belly is a house specialty, cooked to perfection and served with crackling. Diners may choose a two-course or a three-course sophisticated dinner menu. The dinner menu is inspired by what is seasonal and available but may feature combination dishes like aged beef fillet and giant prawns, or dry-aged beef sirloin and pork belly.

The fresh fish of the day is delicately pan-fried and compli-mented with sides and a sauce for example an olive oil mash and sauce vierge. Vegetarians can indulge, too, with options like carrot and ginger soup or brinjal potato gnocchi. The dessert options are tasty, with sweet endings like rich chocolate mousse or feather-light lemon mousse.

Wine
The wine list focuses on Mont Marie wines and also offers a selection of other local wines. It's good value for money and even though the wine list is concise, options and variety suffice.

Service
The staff are warm and welcoming, informed about the menu and special dietary requirements are accommodated with a smile.

Ambience
The drive to Mont Marie and the splendour of the setting alone warrants a visit. The busy restaurant is a daytime favourite amongst tourists, locals and families, with the large deck next to the pond the premier seat. This restaurant offers the best of both worlds, beautiful mountain vistas, delicious food for all – kids included – and an outside play area where the little ones can work off the extra energy under a watchful eye. Dinner is served with soft light, candles and a cosy fireplace for chilly winter’s evenings.

And…
Many of the dishes can be ordered in full and half portions.

    Food
At first glance, the lunch menu at Mont Marie is strangely eclectic, featuring items such as a pulled pork sandwich with coleslaw and fries, as well as a chicken liver parfait with brioche, stone fruit and apple jelly – and they also offer pizza. That’s over and above the kid’s menu. While the choices don’t necessarily seem to be harmonious with one another, the food is very tasty, and the restaurant is almost always full. Fresh breads are baked on-site. The mushroom risotto with gremolata and oxtail jam is smoky and comforting, and a credit to the young chef, Pieter Vlok. The pork belly comes with super crispy crackling, and the nachos are quintessential, as well as generous in quantity. The dinner menu is more concise and offers good value for money with either a two- or three-course option for under R300.

    Drinks
A succinct, straightforward wine list features varietals from Mont Marie, as well as a few nearby farms, and offers good variety.

    Service:
Conversant service from the maître’d will make you feel at ease, and table staff are accommodating and efficient.

    Ambiance
It’s a family friendly, attractive venue. Obvious care has been taken in the styling of the interior. In warmer weather the place to be is on the large deck with views over the dam and beyond to the Helderberg mountains. In cooler months, there is a large fireplace inside, which quickly warms the whole interior – it would be strategic to ask for a seat near the window.

    And…
Instead of having to be on constant best behaviour after they’ve eaten, kiddies can play on the jungle gym outside, whilst you enjoy a lazy meal.

  • My favorite Sunday lunch spot! This beautifully scenic restaurant deck provides the perfect atmosphere for a glass of MCC or cold glass of G&T on the sun beds infont of the dam and the kids love lounging on the bean bags.

  • I couldn't think of a better way to spend a sunday. Relaxing in the winelands, great wine and fantastic food. The line fish with risotto was the overall winner at our table. Kitchen was a little slow, but the waitress kept us informed all the time. You can request a table in the kids play area so that you can relax and watch the kids at the same time without having to get up.

  • Mixed feelings about our experience today. We were given a table not having booked and the staff were friendly and efficient. The food was good but not amazing, the pork didn't have crackling as advertised. The wine was expensive, 100% mark up on their cellar price! Yes a relaxed atmosphere in fairly plush surroundings, but the lady on a table near us whipped her breast out to feed her babies, twins, and the birthday cake presented to the same table was done with the flourish of Spur.

  • The Mont Marie restaurant nestled amongs the green vineyards and embracing mountains on Blaauwklippen road, just outside of Stellenbosch, is a MUST for the food connoisseur! The welcoming staff and Chef Pieter Vlok's vibrant hands-on chefs are commendable, plus the views from the deck are immaculate! The breakfast menu offers a variety of superb options and a special treat and I think popular item is the eggs hollandaise-something worth killing for! Lunch offers a super selection of tasty meals....perfect portion size, sensational taste on the palate and beautiful presentation-perfection on every plate! A supberb selection of fine cuisine! A special treat is undoubtedly the steaks which are matured and served with whatever is in season at the moment. Fish is collected daily from Gordons' Bay and is equally well prepared with a delicate taste and texture. This hidden jewel warrants a visit if nouvelle cuisine is your choice. You simply must experience this gastronomic adventure for your tastebuds. The wine list and service of the staff makes the experience even more pleasant-being perfect. A big plus is the kiddies menu that caters for the young ones and whilst parents can enjoy the view, the awesome jungle gym caters for the little ones

  • What a great night out - beautiful scenery so go early to ensure you catch a glimpse of the majestic mountains in the backdrop. Outside patio with nice sunset views over the dam and should also make for a perfect lunch spot if the sun's out! We had dinner as a group of 6 and the food and service was great. Ordered the R230 2 course option. We had pork belly, beef fillet, duck and sirloin as mains. The sirloin was the overall winner of the night. Very succulent meat with smoky asparagus puree and cheese sauce served with crispy vegetables. The mussel starter was also a favorite at our table. Desert was traditional malva pudding with a twist of orange and crème brulee. What a wonderful night - stunning décor and friendly, attentive service. Our host Carmen will also not let you down making us laugh. Will be back and surely to be recommended and tried if you haven't visited!

  • We were sorry not to have known about this wonderfully located venue amidst some of the finest wine estates outside Stellenbosch before now. Stylishly decorated and scenically situated with welcoming, friendly staff providing excellent service, and an accomplished chef, who has compiled an appealing menu and very good food. We very much look forward to being back there soon. A joy too being able to order smaller or larger versions of several of the delicious items on the menu.
