Food
Come lunchtime, this seaside institution really buzzes – with whale- and view-watchers and seafood lovers alike. Although the fish for which it is named is no longer served, you’ll find a plethora of seafood options – from the ubiquitous laden platters to fish and chips or calamari to more adventurous choices like prawn curry, bacon-wrapped seafood skewers or mussels drenched in a garlicky white-wine sauce. Tasty salads and plenty of meaty grills too, and a healthy nod to Cape cuisine keeps the tourist trade happy.

Wine
Crowd-pleasing and fish-friendly choices pepper the menu with some good reds too.

Service
Although the staff members are on the ball, enthusiasm is not always forthcoming if you’re a local.

Ambience
Take your seat at a table on the terrace and catch sight of whales splashing about while you sip on your vino. The quaint surrounds inside the restaurant are a cosy bet when it’s cold outside.

And...
The Sunday snoek and crayfish braais offer a festive atmosphere and good value for money. (VS, September 2010)

  • Never been to this resturant before, heard what a great places to eat. WHAT A DISSAPPOINTMENT. I had prawn spring rolls. Nothing light and crispy about thease, it tasted as if they had been made a few days ago then warmed up. (NUKED). Main course My favourite Sole. I received 2 flat hard pieces of cardboard which looked like soles, no succulent white flakiness which is normal for sole, to think I paid R149.00 for this is a disgrace. Even the veggies not up to standard. Presentation terrible. WILL NEVER EAT HERE AGAIN.

  • My family, myself and many of my friends have been going to Black Marlin for the past few years and we always had a great time, food and service. Today it was a completely different experience, food was shocking, service was bad, whole vibe has changed for worse. It seems that a once great restaurant has become a typical commercial tourist rip-off pit-stop. After settling the bill I raised my dissatisfaction with the manager and his response reassured my conclusion, he couldn’t care less!

Black Marlin, I am sorry to see you go down like that! Thanks for the good time we had once upon a time but unfortunately never again!

  • Their seafood was average. Meat was poorly done; do not order meat if you go here. Ordered a choc and citrus jus venison and got a cranberry syrup venison. Cranberry syrup/sauce was awful and they didnt even let me know beforehand that they didnt have choc citrus jus leftover. Desert was also pretty average. Service was very slow and poor. Beautifull view though.

  • I celebrated my 50th birthday here. The venue comfortably catered for 90 guests, and got rave reviews about the good food, fantastic ambience and superb ocean views. The inside and outdoor flow from the dining area was exceptional. I can highly recommend this venue for any special occasion. Only the best service was offered, as well as the restaurant ‘coming to the party’ in food and beverage pricing.

  • Celebrated my 50th birthday party at the Black Marlin Restaurant, Millers Point in March 2011. The venue comfortably seated and catered for 90 guests with rave reviews from family and friends about the good food, fantastic ambience and superb ocean views. Exceptional was the inside and outdoor flow from the dining area. I can highly recommend this venue for any special occasion with only the best services offered from management through to service staff as well as the Black Marlin coming to the party in food and beverage pricing!

  • Lovely setting but entirely ruined by poor, unimaginative food , (very stale-looking mussels had to be returned), poorly laid tables, and heaving with tourists from buses led to a very unsavoury experience overall. AND it took ages to get there with long traffic delays over Boyes Drive. Will never go there again!

  • The drive there may long but on a beautiful day in Cape town it it can be well worth the distance to enjoy a restaurant with such a picturesque view. We both ordered the chicken Caesar salad which at best could be descibed as a plain chicken salad. The menu specifically mentioned cos lettuce and we were dished up a bit of red and green frilly lettuce, no pecorino, no anchovies and no croutons. So we munched away and hoped the mains would be an improvement. Big mistake. The R99 seafood platter consisted of bland calamari (served without tartare sauce which you have to request), cold uninspiring prawns and a cold, spongy piece of battered hake thrown together with a few mussels which were suprisingly tasty and redeemed the platter to a certain extent. The service for us was average but Im sure the 5* attention was reserved for the hoards of tourists visiting, considering the tipping potential on offer. Mediocre to poor, the food didnt measure up and sadly it wasnt worth the trek in the end. Might go back for a drink or coffee on the deck, but I think I will pass on the food thanks!

  • January 2010 What a massive disappointment - Sole on the menu but there is no sole apparently for 10 days according to the new chef. The kingklip was small, overcooked and just not up to scratch. However, top prize for comedy act (one can be forgiven for thinking one is eating at Fawlty Towers) is the cheese platter which arrived resplendent with all sorts of cheeses and trimmings all beautifully presented with each piece of cheese resting on a tennis biscuit - yes, I kid you not, a tennis biscuit! A double Frangelico to go with our coffee cost some R 87.00 (half the cost of an entire bottle). The entire meal for four cost R 1 300.00. The view, and the service from the waitron was superb, but the food and logistics - were poor.

  • A vist to Black Marlin in Millers Point Simons Town 8.10,09 was one of the highlihts on our holiday calendar back in SA. What an amazing time we spent there in the past...The food to die for, nice spot. This beautiful venue deserves better than the erratic service of our last visit. What happend with the cat under my table? Presentian of food very poor. Crayfish R210 with yesterdays lettuce. We had to requested for a fingerbowl in a seafood restaurant - not lukewarm water but ice water. The staff catting so loud, no farewell from the staff. We left very disappointed feeling decidedly burned and ripped off.
