Persies is a cosy pub with great history, as the oldest pub in South Africa. The fireplace makes it great in winter. Sometimes there is live music which creates a great atmosphere. They have many different beers on tap and the food is surprisingly good. Pizza's, Burgers and Ribs. The service can be quite slow and sometimes frustrating but in general is ok. This is a great place to watch sport or to have drinks with large groups too.

Went to watch the springboks vs the all black today at the restaurant which was an extremely bad expeience. Firstly there was no sound in the main section of the restaurant which was at capacity fromthe tv's on top of that we could not order a beer as there was not enough staff and it was impossible to order. Will never go back, had to leave at half time, to go finish watching the game at fire mans arms which was totally acceptable with sound and beer. Unacceptable for a reputable pub in cape town

Haven't been to this timeless classic for for about 20 years so a friend and I, both foodies, went for Sunday lunch. They still have amazing eisbein. Very large portion, crispy all over with mash, butternut, beans and sauerkraut and gravy nog al! Really good value for money and so tasty. Impossible to finish in one sitting. Our waitress was friendly, pleasant, efficient and was willing to check our inquiries with the kitchen - appreciated. There was a fire raging which was so pleasant but the room was still quite drafty; a heater or two in some of the areas would be welcomed. Regarding some earlier reviews, we didn't see the owner so I can't comment on this except to say that if I witnessed him abusing his very sweet and decent waitresses I would be disgusted and would get up, leave and never go back. Maybe he's the reason the place is pretty empty? Sad really...

Abusive Owner

We went to Persie's just before midnight to watch Italy v England World Cup. We left 20 minutes into the game after witnessing the owner being incredibly verbally abusive to the waitresses. He kept following them around the tables and shouting things like, 'get back to work you lazy f*ing idiots, what the f*k are you here for.' I want to emphasize that the place was half empty, the kitchen was already closed, and none of the patrons seemed like they required immediate service. There was no reason for him to treat his staff this way. A couple of the waitresses were already off their shifts but he was still hurling abuse at them from his barstool, after which he would turn around and carry on watching the game and joking with whoever was sitting nearby. The waitresses remained calm and carried on with their jobs, and it seemed clear that they were very used to this kind of treatment. We told him why we were leaving and he was dismissive, clearly very drunk and swore at us as we left. Really disturbing vibes at this place and I shudder to think what he says to his staff when customers are not present. We will never go back here. This establishment is an embarrassment to the city of Cape Town.
