Inside Joburg’s new pop-up, House of Amber

Partner

Golden hour just got an upgrade. The House of Amber is Inverroche’s six-week pop-up, where good music, better cocktails and effortless style meet under Joburg’s softest light. Come for the gin, stay for the glow.

In a world that rushes past in a digital blur, The House of Amber emerges as something beautifully different: a space where time moves like honey, where conversations deepen with each carefully crafted sip, and where African luxury reveals itself not through excess, but through intention. Here, in the heart of Johannesburg, Inverroche has created more than a pop-up, they’ve crafted a sensory love letter to the art of slowing down.

“It’s not just a pop-up,” says Inverroche marketing manager Nastasje Cerbone. “It’s a sanctuary of conscious encounters. Every detail – the textures, the tones, the sounds – invites you to pause, connect and rediscover the beauty of slowing down.”

A spirit with a story

The idea for Inverroche’s Amber Gin started as what founder Lorna Scott calls “a crazy idea”.
“No one was making anything like it back then,” she says. “A client once told me, ‘No one’s going to buy brown gin.’”

A decade later, Inverroche is sold in 28 countries – and Amber is the brand’s global best-seller. Now, it has its own home in the city: The House of Amber open until 14 December.

A touch of culture

Actress and Inverroche cultural curator Nomzamo Mbatha describes the space as “an experience you feel, not just see”.
“I don’t think we have anything like this in Johannesburg,” she says. “It’s a place where you can come with friends, listen to good music, have meaningful conversations, and celebrate African luxury.”

For Nomzamo, curating this experience means giving Inverroche “a language” – one that feels proudly African and effortlessly stylish. “A cultural curator doesn’t tell people what an experience should be,” she adds. “They create it and let the energy flow.”

Cocktails, collabs and conscious design

Expect the drinks to be as stylish as the space. The cocktail menu, designed with mixology team Just Short, includes standouts like Ambergroni, Peach Please, and Where There’s Smoke – a dramatic terrarium-style serve that looks almost too pretty to drink.

Global brand ambassador Lauren Penny calls it “a sensory journey”, where taste, touch, smell, and sound come together. “Every sip tells a story,” she says. “We’ve poured love and detail into every part of the experience.”

And it’s not just the drinks that shine. Local collabs bring Inverroche’s philosophy of conscious luxury to life: The Joinery’s eco-felt totes made from recycled bottles, Fieldbar’s elegant coolers, and handcrafted treats from Jack Rabbit Chocolates and 1701 Nougat – each reimagining the gin’s botanicals into edible art.

Designing African luxury

Behind the look and feel of the space is Grid Worldwide’s executive creative director Kyle Schoeman. He’s helped shape Inverroche’s creative identity for over five years and calls The House of Amber “a love letter to African luxury”.

“People often struggle with the idea that something can be both African and luxurious,” he says. “But Inverroche proves it can. It’s born here, made with indigenous plants, and deeply rooted in our soil.”

Your invitation to the House

From acoustic Thursdays and jazzy Fridays to soulful Sunday sessions, each night at The House of Amber brings a new vibe. Whether you come for the cocktails, the culture or the company, it’s an experience worth slowing down for.

As Nomzamo puts it: “Everything here – the design, the sound, the flavours – is intentional and deeply rooted in who we are.”
