Shaking things up: Q&A with mixologist Lucinda Zinyemba

In recent years, cocktail culture has evolved – and so have its patrons. We’re drinking more intentionally; we demand innovation, technique and fair; and we’re invested in the dynamic figures working behind the bar.

Lucinda Zinyemba can best be described as an inventor, mixing mind-bending cocktails that push the envelope and ignite lively conversation. It’s no wonder that this maverick with a ceaselessly creative edge has made an impression on Joburg’s cocktail scene.

We caught up with her to ask about her guiding principles, the achievements she’s most proud of, and the passion she brings to the world of cocktails.

What are some of your career highlights?
“The milestones that mean the most to me include becoming the first black woman to be in the top six and the top 10, respectively, in the Patrón Perfectionists and Diageo World Class competitions in the same year. Another highlight was being invited to be a judge at the Monin Cup international competition, and join the Angostura Bar & Beverage Awards judging panel in South Africa, which allowed me to showcase the value of diverse perspectives on a global stage. Founding Lucy’s Magique [Lucinda’s recently established beverage catering company] has also been transformative.”
