Went to French Toast on Friday, 28/12/2018, arrived at 09:55 for breakfast for 15 people. We phoned earlier in the week to make a reservation - was told that they did not take any reservations in the holiday season, even though we explained that it was a special occasion and that some of the people attending are travelling from as far as Sasolburg. We arrived and was put on a waiting list, was 4th from the top of the page. We decided to sit on a long table in front of the bakery section and wait for a table. We were told that no waiter attends to those tables, but we were welcome to order from the bakery while we wait. We were starving at 11:00, so decided to buy Chocolate Croissants and cold drinks. At 11:45 we were still waiting for a table. The 3 ladies doing the table allocations did not come to us once to advise on any progress, they actually ignored us. When we started asking on how long it would still be, we were told that they had no idea how long it would be. In the mean time the staff were phoning people to tell them that tables were ready, only to wait for the people to get there. We eventually got fed up at 12:00 and decided to leave. The "booking" madam then decides to comes over to us advising us that they had a table available for 8 people - my goodness!!!! We are 15 in our party! I will NEVER ever visit French Toast EVER again...nor will I refer ANYONE to the restaurant
I was looking forward to visiting French Toast and was expecting to experience the same feeling of joie de vivre which one gets from strolling through Franschoek. Sadly, I was sorely disappointed. As we arrived we discovered the Eiffel Tower and bridge of locks with many people posing for photos. Slightly tacky but fun and the best part of our experience. We were told there were only tables available inside - a bit dark and dingy inside. Thereafter we placed our order for the simplest of Parisian treats. Cafe au laits with croissants. The coffees took about 10 minutes to come. Thereafter it took an hour for 2 tiny little croissant offerings to come to the table. Smothered in icing sugar. And served with a huge glob of cream squirted from a can. Once we broke open our croissants they were buttery and authentic inside but so small and the icing sugar was completely unneccessary. While waiting I did study the menu and looked at what other patrons were eating. Lots of hot dogs were what I saw piled high with all sorts of toppings. I found this strangely not typically French! As the croissants came we asked for the bill, this never came and we eventually got up and were unhelpfully assisted to pay at the waiter’s station.
French toast provides a good mid week break away for a quick peaceful coffee or milk shake. The environment is inviting and it is a wonderful place to seek a sun spot mid-morning. French Toast is more an experience, than an eating experience. Every time it is an entertaining outing to an ever changing, but still familiar, and never boring place, where it is easy to share special moments with friends and family. Management has taken the utmost care to create an engaging and interesting environment.
The 5 of us were squeezed on to a table for 4. The hostess refused to move us to a larger table as she claims bigger groups were coming. We sat down with hungry children and at the end of the meal there were still 2 empty tables that could have accommodated us. The food was dull, dry and uninspired. Their flagship French toast was just regular lifeless bread with egg wash. What a disappoint. Please only come here for a drink and pictures with the Eiffel tower replica. Save your appetite and your pocket. They have the opportunity to really be wonderful but their racist/lazy white hostess' and cook methods need to go. Shape up or shut down.
