5 local groups fighting hunger – and how to join them

Today is World Food Day and this year the theme is zero hunger, making it the perfect time to shine light on the organisations in South Africa working tirelessly to eradicate hunger. It’s an important fight in our country, where over 14 million citizens suffer from hunger. With that in mind, we rounded up 5 organisations in SA working to bust hunger, plus how you can get involved.

FoodForward SA

Food Forward SA collects edible food from manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers then distributes it to hundreds of organisations that collectively feed thousands of hungry people daily. Altogether, Food Forward manages to feed 250 000 people daily. Get involved by donating money, holding food drives or purchasing merchandise. Find out more here.

HPSA

HPSA is a registered  non-profit community-development organisation that assists communities in helping themselves out of hunger and poverty through farming. HPSA has worked in partnership with over 4000 families in KwaZulu-Natal, the Eastern Cape and Limpopo to provide them with the knowledge, skills and resources needed to develop their farms into sustainable small businesses capable of feeding and supporting themselves. Help with these sustainable practices by paying for any of the resources needed – from R300 for honey bees to R12 000 for a cow. Find out more here.

Operation Hunger

Operation Hunger wants to improve levels of nutrition in impoverished communities through sustainable income-generating food schemes like soup kitchens, gardens and egg-laying projects. Operation Hunger provides meals to 2 400 people on a daily basis and supports 26 soup kitchens between the Western Cape and Port Elizabeth. Individuals and organisations can assist with the fight against malnutrition by making cash donations, hosting an Operation Hunger fundraising event and volunteering. Find out more here.

Peninsula School Feeding Association (PSFA)

PSFA feeds 26 790 children from 170 schools and has provided over 1.6 billion nutritious meals to hungry schoolchildren across the Western Province since its inception. Assist PSFA by making donations – they start from R62, which feeds a child for a month! There are several more ways to get involved, including signing up as an activist and putting money towards catering equipment and training members of the community to prepare food. Find out more here.

Rise Against Hunger Africa

Rise Against Hunger South Africa  is a volunteer-based meal packaging and nutrition programme currently operating in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Pietermaritzburg and East London. It focuses on hungry, vulnerable children in pre-school or Early Childhood Development centres. Want to help out? Simply write a review to feed one of these tummies. For every restaurant review written by an Eat Out reader, we’ll pledge one meal for a hungry child through Rise Against Hunger SA’s programme. (Eat Out has contributed 2 473 Stop Hunger Now meals in the past year and 10 552 since November 2014!)
