Contemporary South African at Nyoni’s Kraal

Sleek new African restaurant, Nyoni’s Kraal, has recently opened in Cape Town’s buzzy Long Street.

The look is very Afro-chic and the menu a contemporary translation of African, Eastern and European flavours, the result – modern South African.

The menu is very large and you are sure to find something to your taste – maybe even to stretch your comfort zone a bit!

Sample menu
Starters
Marinated Snoek – succulent snoek pieces, marinated in olive oil, lemon juice, Tabasco, onion slices, scallions, mixed fresh herbs and assorted vegetables, served with corn flavoured pot bread

Emzantsi Platter – a combination of traditional fare. Grilled mushrooms, stuffed calamari, snoek slivers, biltong shavings and roast corn, served with peanut flavoured dressing

Springbok Carpaccio – thinly sliced wafers of succulent marinated springbok, served with rocket lettuce, parmesan shavings and balsamic vinaigrette

Main
Divided into the following:
Local (Cape Town fare): breyani, rooti and curry

African fare: tripe curry – tender curried tripe, served with a sweetened vetkoek parcel of samp, beans and a refreshing side salad; Samp and Stew – samp and beans topped with chicken / beef or lamb stew, served with herb flavoured baked bread or pap and meat towers. All with plenty side dishes.

From the braai: lamb, beef and fish from the braai

Interesting South African dishes:
Game Medallions – grilled medallions served with peanut flavoured spinach, creamed potato, vegetable rosti, skewer of vegetables, samp and mango jus

Stuffed Fillet – fillet stuffed with spinach, peppers and feta cheese, laid on vegetable rostis, served with freshly baked bread, citrus salad and biltong flavoured jus

Seafood: including prawns, snoek and a Snoek and Mussel Tower

Dessert
The Tree Limbs sound interesting – chocolate flakes and succulent sugar cane served on a crunchy sugar nut bed, smothered in crushed flavoured ice.
