Though Capetonians tend to take shelter during winter, it’s actually (secretly) a great time to be in the Mother City thanks to it famous winter specials. You’ll have to leave the house at some point, so make sure it’s to head to one of these restaurants.
The 41 Restaurant and Bar (Camps Bay)
Enjoy the Camps Bay vibe regardless of the cooler weather with The 41’s winter menu. Choose two courses for R180 or three for R220 from the winter menu that includes a warming soup of the day, a Thai chicken-and-prawn curry and crème brûlée for dessert.
Bacon on Bree (City Bowl)
Tackling those dreary morning blues is Bacon on Bree, with its superb winter special. Pick up a fried egg and bacon sandwich for R30 every weekday morning between 7.30am and 10am and get a free glass of bubbly with any breakfast item from 8.30am to 10am on Saturday mornings.
Bilboa (Camps Bay)
Choose either two courses for R195 or three for R250 from Bilboa’s winter menu. Starter options include baby squid with chorizo aioli or fried haloumi with za’atar yoghurt; for mains you can opt for the hearty short rib served with flatbread and yoghurt, or swordfish with chermoula and tomato. Go all out for dessert with a rich baked chocolate ganache or farro pudding with caramelised oranges and tahini.
Bistro Sixteen82 (Steenberg)
You’ll be spoiled for choice at Bistro Sixteen82 this winter, where you can choose two courses for R205, three courses for R235 and four courses for R265. Think dishes like pickled fish, chicken liver bruschetta, and parsnip and apple soup for starters; and mains of sustainable fish, pulled pork and ricotta gnocchi, and a pea and caramelised onion risotto. If you’re going for dessert, there’s a choice between a dreamy yoghurt mousse, a delicious chocolate éclair and a spiced plum pudding. You can also enjoy a wintery breakfast. The Vintner’s Breakfast includes a glass of Steenberg bubbly with your choice of signature classics on the breakfast menu, including eggs Benedict and tea or coffee. It’s followed by a cellar tour and wine tasting. The Vintner’s Breakfast costs R165 per person and is available during weekdays from 9am and ends with the cellar tour at 11am. Lastly, the chef’s special of five tapas dishes for R325 is ideal as an early supper for two, available between 5pm and 8pm.
Bistro at Klein Constantia (Constantia)
This cosy bistro is offering a special winter menu Tuesdays to Fridays. For R220 for two courses or R290 for three courses, tuck into tasty dishes like a country pork terrine or warming onion soup, before moving on to breaded hake served with curried mayo or beef fillet, pommes frites and a cafe au lait sauce, and a naartjie and vanilla crème brûlée for dessert.
Blanko Restaurant (Constantia)
Enjoy the best of the wintery weather at Blanko by indulging in the winter set menu. Choose from dishes like spinach and ricotta gnocchi or bolognese arancini for starters; sirloin with fries and pepper sauce, or linefish tagliata for mains; and a warm fudge pudding or orange crème brûlée for dessert. Pay R190 for two courses or R240 for three.
The Bungalow Restaurant (Camps Bay)
Choose one of the special winter dishes like lamb curry or mussels in a creamy white wine sauce. Or opt for the set menu option, where two courses cost R220 and three cost R260. The set menu includes starters like a soup of the day or grilled calamari with tartare sauce, and mains such as classic fish and chips or fillet pasta. For a sweet ending, choose between malva pudding and vanilla panna cotta.
Catharina’s Restaurant (Steenberg)
The iconic Catharina’s offers a special seasonal menu this winter. Choose two courses for R185 or three for R215 and tuck into hearty starters like roast cream of tomato soup, or a seafood croquette with tempura veggies and tomato salsa. Mains include sous vide pork belly with crushed potatoes and stir-fried vegetables, or battered kingklip and chips. If you’re after dessert, there’s a sticky date pudding, sorbets and an Amarula crème brûlée from which to choose.
Cheyne’s (Hout Bay)
Head out to Hout Bay to make the most of the winter specials on offer at Cheyne’s this season. His annual yum cha menu is back, which allows you to tuck into any three dishes at R150 per person.
A glass of vino to accompany a pizza on Tuesday nights out no longer seems like such a splurge at Col’Cacchio, where patrons can buy a pizza or pasta and get a less expensive pizza or pasta free. Enjoy the huge range of pastas and pizzas, including options for vegans and vegetarians, like the Cosi Verde with its spinach base, vegan cheese, broccoli, edamame, vegan basil pesto, spring onion and black pepper. The Deckhouse Crab Shack & BBQ (Gardens)
The Deckhouse is hosting its famed rib special again this winter. R195 buys you bottomless pork or beef ribs on Mondays. Also still available is its sippin’ ‘n’ dippin’ promotion (50% off appetisers and selected drinks) over the weekends from 5pm to 7pm on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.
Dalliance (V&A Waterfront)
Dalliance is offering a winter night to remember with a two-course set menu for R180 or three courses for R225. Choose from Belgian mussels, butternut gnocchi or the soup of the day starters. For mains, go for slow braised rib-eye, grilled hake with Hollandaise or mushroom orzo. Finish with banana and caramel crêpes, chocolate mud pie or apple-and-berry crumble.
De Grendel Restaurant (Durbanville)
Enjoy a three-course lunch at De Grendel for R425, which includes starters like tuna tataki, then move on to mains like crumbed wild mushrooms, short rib and smoked veal tongue. For dessert, choose from a Valrhona version of an Aero chocolate, Nutella mousse and a trio of sorbets.
Firefish Restaurant (V&A Waterfront)
Enjoy the picturesque waterfront while tucking into Firefish’s winter menu offering. Get two courses for R180 or three courses for R230. Choose between dishes like pork cheek and chicken yakitori for starters; and mains like Malaysian fish curry or Szechuan pepper braised beef short rib and mashed potato.
The Foodbarn (Noordhoek)
Treat yourself to Franck Dangereux’s incredible food with The Foodbarn’s winter special. Choose two courses for R235, three courses for R295 or four courses for R365.
Indulge in two to four plates of Foxcroft’s tapas for between R195 and R295 per person. This special is available for lunch on Mondays to Fridays. Book via 0212023304.
Goloso (Sea Point)
Enjoy an early dinner at Goloso, where you can get any two traditional pizzas or traditional pastas with a bottle of wine for R250 between 5pm and 7pm. Available Mondays to Sundays.
The Greek Fisherman (V&A Waterfront)
Go all out on seafood by paying R199 for your first seafood platter and getting 50% off your second. This special is available Monday to Sunday between 11am and 7pm until 31 August.
Indulge in Harbour House’s winter set menu running until 13 June. Choose between two courses for R225 or three courses for R255. Expect starters such as prawn bisque and mains like beef sirloin with creamy potatoes or pea risotto. Finish off with Eton mess. This special is available Mondays to Sundays, except for Sunday lunches.
Kyoto Garden Sushi Japanese Restaurant (Gardens)
Enjoy an authentic Japanese dining experience with three courses and a glass of wine for just R220 at this favourite Kloofnek restaurant.
Kloof Street House (Gardens)
Warm up with this two-course (R170 per person) or three-course (R195 per person) winter lunch special. This offer is available for lunch, Tuesdays to Saturdays from 12pm to 5pm.
La Belle (Camps Bay)
La Belle is offering a special menu this winter that includes a handful of well-priced dishes. Fill up on grilled hake with potato purée and a beurre blanc for R120; a creamy broccoli soup for R60; or a lentil, roast veggie and chickpea pie for R95.
La Colombe (Constantia Nek)
Enjoy some of the Cape’s finest food whilst soaking up the views of the Constantia Valley this winter as La Colombe’s winter lunch special returns. Valid from 16 April till 31 August 2018 (with a brief pause while they go on annual leave until early July) they are offering R465 per person for 4 courses.
La Tête (City Bowl)
Choose three of Giles Edwards’ delicious dishes for R220 as part of the winter special. On Wednesdays they’ll even throw in a complimentary glass of wine from the featured winery of the week. The menu changes often but could include crispy pigs’ tails with aioli, roast quail and chips, or chicken liver toast.
La Mouette (Sea Point)
La Mouette’s winter menu is a steal at R295 for 5 courses, which includes their famous cheese croquettes with aioli, pan-fried calamari and roast chicken (although the menu may change slightly with the seasons). Make sure you ask for a table next to one of their fireplaces. This special will run until 30 September.
Lola’s (City Bowl)
Enjoy the winter warmer served from 12pm to 4.30pm Mondays to Fridays. Tuck into dishes like pork bangers and mash with onion gravy, beef lasagne, chilli con carne with sour cream and dirty rice, or fish pie with herb-infused mash and wilted spinach. Each dish costs just R75. You could also opt for the all-day takeaway soup offering, which comes with freshly baked ciabatta. This special is available Mondays to Fridays for R40. The specials will run until 31 August.
Manna Epicure (Gardens)
Manna has welcomed winter by extending the hours of its year-long dinner special. Order a two-course dinner for R150 or three courses for R185. Available Monday to Friday from 5pm until close.
Meloncino (V&A Waterfront)
Pay R99 for any pizza or pasta dish (except the Spaghetti Scoglio and Linguine all’ Astice). This special is available Mondays to Sundays between 11am and 7pm until 31 August.
Mondiall (V&A Waterfront)
Spoil yourself this winter with Mondiall’s daily specials for R95. Else opt for the set menu for R195 for two courses and R235 for three courses.
Tuck into the winter set lunch menu at R189 per person for two courses and R229 for three courses. This special is valid until 31 August and is available Monday to Sunday from 6pm.
NV-80 (Sea Point)
Enjoy two courses for R220 or three courses for R280. Have them for lunch Mondays to Sundays and for dinner Sundays to Thursdays. Dishes include trinchado, tomato soup, grilled baby chicken, sirloin with pepper sauce and chocolate fondant.
Paranga (Camps Bay)
Warm up to a two-course set menu at R240 per person, or get three courses for R290. Highlights include beef carpaccio, slow-braised beef short rib and glazed lemon tart. This special is available both lunch and dinner until 31 August.
Pepenero (Mouille Point)
This Mouille Point spot is offering a select menu of well-priced dishes until 30 June. Choose a seafood platter for R129, fish and chips for R99 or a chicken burger for R59.
Pigalle (Green Point)
Enjoy a winter seafood platter for two for R695. This special includes two Natal lobsters, prawns, line fish, calamari and mussels. Also on offer is the two-course menu for R285 or the three-course menu for R315. These specials are available on Mondays and Thursdays for dinner only, and Mondays to Saturdays for lunch only.
Primal Eatery (Gardens)
Tuck into Primal Eatery’s steak dinner for two winter special. The special includes two 400g sirloins on the bone, two chips or salad, one deep-fried Oreo sundae with a banana split and braaied marshmallow ice cream to share, and a bottle of Bellingham shiraz. Enjoy with a loved one for R450 per couple, Tuesdays to Saturdays from 6pm.
Rockpool (Sea Point)
This spot’s view is reason enough to get out of the house this winter, but in case you need more convincing, they have a great winter special on, too. From 1 June to 31 August, they’re running a buy-one-get-one-free special on their burgers and pizzas. This is available Monday to Thursdays.
The Roundhouse (Camps Bay)
The Roundhouse is celebrating winter with a four-course set menu for R395 (R635 with wine pairing) until the end of June. The menu includes a butternut velouté, pan-fried hake with asparagus and roasted free-range chicken. Dessert is a choice between the soufflé of the day or a naartjie-and-walnut cheesecake mousse.
Shimmy Beach Club (V&A Waterfront)
The party never stops at Shimmy, even in winter. On Tuesdays from 11am to 11pm, you’ll get 50% off the entire Shimmy menu. On Wednesdays to Fridays, from 11am to 11pm, enjoy half price off all pizzas, sushi and dim sum. Then, on Friday evenings, from 6pm, enjoy a pot luck-style family meal for R250 per person.
The Shortmarket Club (City Bowl)
The Shortmarket Club’s three-course prix fixe winter lunch menu returns once more this winter. Priced at R280 per person, or R380 per person including a carafe of wine, it is available at lunchtime from Mondays to Saturdays until 30 September.
The Square at The Vineyard Hotel (Newlands)
Choose two courses for R265 per person or three courses for R325 per person from a set menu. As the menu is influenced by the seasons, it will change every two weeks, but think along the lines of starters like cauliflower and gorgonzola velouté with roasted baby corn; mains like braised oxtail skilpaadjie; and dark chocolate and almond torte for dessert.
Spiro’s (Hout Bay)
Mondays to Thursdays from 3pm to 9pm, and Sundays from 4pm to 8pm, you can enjoy a select offering of Spiro’s delicious food. Try the pork belly souvlaki for R85, the chicken gyro for R70 or moussaka for R95. This special excludes sides.
Umi (Camps Bay)
Enjoy two courses for R190 and three courses for R230 at Umi this winter. Highlights include octopus carpaccio, salt-and-pepper chilli squid and braised sweet-and-sour short rib.
Zenzero (Camps Bay)
Enjoy the Camps Bay vibes as you take advantage of the great winter special at Zenzero. Order two courses for R220 and 3 courses for R270. Look out for the great seafood options, like the calamari and the grilled catch of the day.
