The Mpumalanga salad with greens, avo, macadamia nuts and orange is excellent with the house flatbread (cumin, coriander, olive oil and lemon). Innovative Afro-fusion dishes include air-dried Kudu bresaola with strawberries, feta, cocktail tomatoes, red onion, cucumber and Dijon vinaigrette, or ostrich berbere (Ethiopian spice mix) served with Zimbabwean nhopi dovi, a peanut and pumpkin mash.

Wine
Many great suggestions and selections by the in-house sommelier, such as M’hudi Pinotage.

Service
While you could easily be distracted by the feather headdresses, hand washing and face painting at Moyo, this is a quality restaurant run with solid principles in place. The waiters and managers are friendly, courteous, helpful and attentive.

Ambience
While you may feel like you’re visiting a Hollywood-fantasy version of some far-flung African city, enjoy the experience for what it is: a celebration of African food and culture.

And...
The outside buffet area represents good value for money, with many protein options prepared to order. Choose from tasty beef sosaties, kudu chops, boerewors, butterfish, calamari, grilled chicken, chakalaka, lamb curry, a cheese table, good selection of salads and vegetables, and desserts.   • We were a group of friends meeting for drinks on a week night. We ordered mostly drinks with some snack platters which were delicious....BUT The bill came to R1147. I gave the waiter my card and said to him I wished to pay R500. Of the bill. He repeated"500!" With that he did a transaction , gave me my slip and card and left..... We sat waiting for him to return with the remaining amount and laughed thinking he had forgotten. He hadn't forgotten at all!! He put the bill through for R1647!! R500 tip he thought he would slip in for himself!! This was by no means a mistake.. He went straight back to setting tables as if nothing had happened!!! I am certain this happens often as it is a tourist restaurant and dark so no one sees their bill or notices amongst the noise of the dancing!! To make it worse, the manager supported his waiter and reluctantly paid back the R500. BE WARNED OF this OBVIOUS FRAUD!!!!

  • I booked a table at Moyo Zoo Lake for Mother's Day on 12 May 2013. We were seated about 5 minutes walk from the buffet lunch that was served this day. The Manager on duty refused to refund the deposit paid on booking for this, but offered to seat us in the 'garden' close to the buffet. After 20 minutes waiting to be seated again, a table on the outskirts of the garden was finally set up. The waiter then took a further 20 minutes to get our drinks order and wrist bands indicating that we are guests for the buffet. After queuing for a further 20 minutes to get to the buffet table, we headed back to our table on to find that my mom's chair was removed from the table (all this on Mother's Day). The garden was pebbled, which meant that all patrons passing our table kicked up dust onto the food that we had to queue so long for. The waiter took a further 20 minutes to bring our bill after the meal was finished.

    I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone who has a special occasion to celebrate.

  • I booked a table at Moyo Zoo Lake for the 6th of Jan 2013 for my birthday after reading a few very good reviews. We arrived at 12,45 and waited for the rest of our party to get there. When everybody was seated it took the waiter forever to come and take our drink order and another long while to place our food order. Out of the 7 people, 3 ate buffet and the remaining 4 of us ordered of the a la carte menu. We were pre-warned that it might take a bit long. I was the only one to order a starter of springbuck Carpaccio. After about an hour and a half, the mains started to appear at the table, no starter in sight.

    Our food was very well-prepared and tasted divine, but the very long wait was extremely disappointing. At some point we ordered 7 don pedro’s, which we had to wait for 45min.

    The restaurant was lovely and the atmosphere great. I however feel very strongly that something should be done about the lack of service.

  • On Saturday, 06 Oct 2012, 9 of us wanted to have a relaxed luncheon and drinks. We waited 15 minutes to be served, and then waited 30 minutes to get drinks. We decided that to attempt in getting food will just be a bad idea. So we asked for the bill instead which took another 20 minutes to arrive. Shocking!

  • The first time I went for a Sunday lunch (over a year ago) it was great. I recently took some American friends who I wanted to impress with how great South Africa is (now was). It was a buffet meal. The food was dried out - the lamb chops were completely dried out, we all ate different meals and it was all so poorly prepared. It was like no-one cared! The desserts were all in little pastry cups - so hard we couldn't even bite through them. The service was shoddy. No-one really cared. And to cap it all it was incredibly over priced - never ever again!

  • I have been to this restaurant three times on both with family and friends. The food is reasonable but the prices one pays makes it poor value for money. I was served a steak on a polished metal spade with mash, and no veggies to accompany it. If you are into eating off garden tools then this is your restaurant...not a restaurant of my choice...only go there if a group decision is made to eat at Moyo.

  • I have been to Moyo Zoo Lake several times. I keep returning because I love relaxing on the deck overlooking the lake. However the service is terrible. I get better service at a restaurant take is 10 times cheaper then Moyo. The waiters take forever to attend to you, and your order takes even longer to get there. This spoils what would be an excellent restaurant.

  • It was a cold winters night and the reception matched the weather. Our table was not ready and we were asked to wait outside on the patio, where drinks and blankets were promised. The blankets never arrived and the drinks arrived in time for our first course. Staff recommended we eat the buffet - which we found to our dismay to be outside with very poor lighting. The reason for such poor lighting became apparent when we inspected our food at the bar (only area with decent lighting). Going into detail about the food is superfluous, very disappointing. Our reason for visiting Moyo - to take our Italian guest for a typical South African meal/experience. We declined the invitation to the free desserts table and headed for The Green Truffle in Greenside for a classy dessert, espresso and grappa.

  • We were a table of 6 and were persuaded by the waitress to opt for the buffet although I wasnt particularly keen on this idea. The buffet was very mediocre. Starters consisted of nothing more than your usual make-your-own- salads. Main course was a little better with a selection of meats, fish etc. However, the roated or stri-fried veges were dripping in oil. The dessert table was almost in darkness and one couldnt see what was on offer. Our first wine selection wasnt available - we were told that all Moyo wines were not available!We also had to wait for clean cutlery a couple of times.All in all, not a bag evening but its certainly not a restaurant I would go back to or recommend.
