This eatery, in its new incarnation as Pizzeria Locale (previously known as the Pizza Place and Garden Café), is still very much the local pizza place, but now also serves hamburgers and pancakes.
The hamburger menu charmingly evokes a community-oriented spirit, with names like Linden, Blairgowrie, Victory Park and Emmarentia – all of which are 180g beef burgers, paying homage to the surrounding suburbs.
If you want to indulge, you can simply order a Big Locale, which is your choice of any of the beef burgers with two patties instead of one. If you prefer chicken, the same option is available.
The simple fillings range from classic lettuce, tomato and onion to more flavoursome options like bacon, cheddar, gherkins and mushrooms. Just R10 extra gets you chips on the side.
The pizza menu offers more variety, as to be expected. It’s probably best to just create your own pizza; too much choice can get confusing, especially when dining as a group! The medium pizzas are large enough (23cm and cut into nine slices) and inexpensive enough to satisfy both you and your friends at the table who predictably abandon their food and opt to colonise yours because they chronically suffer from order envy.
It’s worth coming to Pizza Locale for the pancakes, too. They are reasonably priced and come in appealing combinations such as chocolate and toffee; cinnamon, sugar, banana and toffee; and Nutella and banana, among others.
In addition to the usual suspects – Amstel and Windhoek beer; dry red and white wines sold by the glass; Bell’s whisky – there are a number of hot drinks from which to choose. The hot chocolate is dreamy.
Respectable. There is someone at the door to seat you as you enter, give you a menu and take your drink order while you mull over which pizza to choose. Staff members are prompt with answering phone calls if you feel moved to ring ahead to reserve a table.
This is a large restaurant with plenty of seating. Whether you choose to sit in the garden among the birds – some in cages; some fluttering about – cheerfully chirping away as you feast, or on the terrace for some shade, you’ll enjoy the relaxed environment.
Pizzeria Locale is a welcoming venue that encourages you to eat and socialise languidly with friends, family and even your pets.
