Owners description

SŸN has been conceptualised by the two chefs who masterminded the concept of Gåte in Stellenbosch, the two being Warwick King (The Stack, Delaire Graff) and Rikku Ó’Donnchü.

The restaurant is situated on Bree street, on the third floor above Italian destination restaurant Villa 47. The name of the restaurant is pronounced like 'sin' but means great expansion, which the duo plans on doing a lot of this year.

SŸN at 47 is a ‘permanent pop-up’, running from July to October, when it will close in order for them to open their permanent restaurant also in Cape Town's City Bowl.

Rikku's resumé includes the likes of Heston Blumenthal’s The Fat Duck and Thomas Keller’s The French Laundry, as well the godfather of modern cookery himself, Marco Pierre White. Ó’Donnchü has also starred on the hit BBC program Masterchef: The Professionals, and has had collaborations with Lay’s, Yuppiechef and Robertson’s spices.

At SŸN you should expect the unexpected.

User reviews

  • The food was really high-end and surprisingly very filling. It was my first "fine-dining" experience and what a way to rip the bandaid off! Tastes and textures that tantalized and confused my tastebuds. I also thought the food presentation was original and gutsy. I see Syn@47 like to push the boundaries/limitations of food with an exceptionally delicious outcome!

  • Date night with hubby has become a non negotiable. We go on a date at least once a week... especially with busy schedules and baby, we seldom get to spend quality time together and just have fun. This was at @thesyngroup and boy oh boy was it amazing. I’ve been preoccupied recently but the theatre and pleasure of dinning with you still lingers on weeks after. @chef_rikku I love your trickery and mastery, such a beautiful blend of all things wonderful... everyone should go oh and we had a bottle of @ghmumm and highly recommend it with your 16 course experience... there are also bottle of wine worth 70k on the menu, highly impressed by how carefully curated this menu is and how it pays homage to both our country and our globe. I also love how you’ve stayed true to who you are, there are pieces of you in each of your master pieces and I admire that you have not budged! The right person will get your concept and the wrong person will not... you win either way! #gastronomy #worldsbestrestuarants @michelinguide and as always I would not choose anyone else in the galaxy to share my fun with besides @michaellegrange my partner in crime... here we are seen trying to disguise our voices, a tribute to @grant_achatz that chef Rikku personally acknowledges. I love how we got to interact with all the chefs and how they aren’t like other chefs... they’re fun, humble, patient, funny and really really knowledgeable on the menu in a playful way @ SŸN at 47

  • The service was absolutely amazing and you really do feel at home and comfortable upon arrival and throughout,. Our waiter at the time had suggested a great bottle of wine which paired well with the adventurous food we were presented with, it really takes you for a trip as each dish is explained before you are taken on the real ride. Fine dining has never been this fun. The science, thought and heart behind all that you experience at SYN is beyond this world. I'm excited to visit again soon and you should DEFINITELY make your way there and experience it yourself cause words really can't describe it all...

  • Look. This is not your run of the mill average restaurant. It's all about the food. The art. The science the experience and the bloody wine pairing is incredible. Well balanced and complements each dish perfectly. You actually feel bad eating such masterpieces. But that visual love soon turns into a flavor fantasy that can only be described as angels moonwalking on your tongue. It's feels like you in an episode of Chefs Table. Go experience it. You can't go wrong.

  • The amount of effort and skill Rikku and Wawrick put into their food is phenomenal. Lots of credit is due to them and the rest of the staff. At same time the service levels are perfect. Attentive but not overly so. And lets not forget the perfectly paired wines - The ideal harmony where both the food and wine are raised to a new level. One of Cape Towns best. Do yourself a favour and visit them asap.

  • Being a fellow chef and restauranteur I am well aware of the amount of effort, skill and dedication it takes to create a unique dining experience. That is exactly what Rikku and his team have done at Syn @ 47. Rikku's food is on par with some of the most acclaimed molecular gastronomic professionals on the planet. To be able to pull off the technique, execution and consistency of his style of cuisine at such a level is a feat in its self. Each course is well thought through and excites the mind as well as the palate! Fun dining at it's best!

  • One thing I look for as a diner and very few places can satisfy my spirit of adventure, is the same sensation that you would get from the comforting ideas you would between the gentle pages of a book. Ideas on a plate. A story. Inspiration to move mountains. Soul shaking food. SŸN is my latest literary (foodie) addiction. Not only is their wait staff knowledgeable and attentive to detail, ready to guide you through the myriad or rabbit holes created by the ambience of art (all acquired and appraised by our locals,) the food takes you on an adventure around the world with a palate of a travelled seasoned chef garni'd with The Creators' personal flare and touch, of which You —the Diner— are the main protagonist. Bombarded by an orgasmic waves of sensory over-load and plot twists that befuddles the line of traditional dining The SŸNNERS leave you with bittersweet longing for more adventures! Thankfully they're still in their popup phases (a juicy prequil, if you will), so rest assured we'll see more of The SŸNNERS journey and how deep the rabbit hole goes....

  • Rather than weaving a silly story of myself and garnishing my opinion with $10 words... Let’s keep it simple. I’m a Chef from NYC, I’ve worked in three Michelin star restaurants. Hopefully that qualifies this statement. There are only a handful of mentionable restaurants in Cape Town, Test Kitchen and the likes. Well, it’s now time to start mentioning SYN @ 47.

  • Wow! such an absolute treat. From the moment we sat down, to the time we had paid the bill - we were treated like rockstars (mostly due to epic selection of music hits). Anywhere you sit in the restaurant, feels like you have the best seat in the house. The staff are brilliantly attentive to your every need, and the food is magic. The whole experience is like you are Harry Potter casting spells, each plate is mysteriously beautiful - and every bite is like a treasure. So different from the fine dining restaurants in the area, will definitely go back again and again... especially for the Pots and Fossil, and Holy Smoke!! #yummy

  • The face of fine-dining in Cape Town is changing and SŸN is a testament to this. Bye pretense, hello fun! The menu is inventive – Holy Smoke is my absolute favourite – and the wine list, extensive. And while 12 courses might sound insane, the portion sizes are small enough to allow you to enjoy each one. I especially like the fact that the chefs swing by the table for a quick hello and chat about the dishes. If you’re hungry for a unique dining experience, head to SŸN.

  • What a great experience! Chef Warwick and Chef Rikku have outdone themselves with excellent flavors and atmosphere! My favorite course was cathulu. Beautifully pickled octopus, crispy tentacles, luscious squid and probably the most tasty jalapeño achar that I have ever had. Everything on the plate was extremely tasty, Wish I could have had more. The ambiance was incredible, rock music playing in the background and the theatre with dry ice and smoke blew me away! All the course were amazing, and at the end, a edible balloon which took me back to when I was a child. Highly recommend this restaurant

  • I'm not a fine dining connoisseur, but I've had my fair share of crazy culinary experiences ...But Sÿn @ 47 was definitely the most memorable sit down restaurant experience I've ever had. Particular fave was the ashtray dish that set the scene for some of the most unique and deep flavours I've ever tasted. 10/10 would recommend to anyone looking for a once in a lifetime experience. If you want normal, there's a Spur close by.

  • The entire dinning experience was a visual, emotional and tasting explosion, with every course building anticipation for the next. "Mind blown" with the plating designs, the ingredients and finally the taste. The attention to detail by both the waiter and chefs is outstanding. And the service we received was "next level", with the vibe in the restaurant being both relaxing as well as feeling like you are somewhere very special. A truly unique experience that I can recommend to anyone who wants to experience dinning like no other!!! SŸN @ 47 thank you and see you soon.

  • As a great food lover and appreciative of all good things in life I thought the experiance at SYN was exeptional. The food left me making sounds of appreciation and wonder with every bite. Another great take away from the meal was that i was well satisfied after. The clean flavoured food did not make me feel too rich afterward. I will be back for sure!

  • The vibe was up-market but casual and non-pretentious, the rock music playing in the background was a nice change from the regular instrumentals you'd expect to find in a fine dining restaurant. The food was beautiful, fun and interesting with a couple of surprises in between. Some of the portions could have been a little smaller, but when i asked to take some of my "duck egg" home, chef Rikku happily made me a foil swan, which i then enjoyed for breakfast - We had a great time at Sÿn!

  • Yet another opulent experience is given by two of the most talented chefs I know - Chef Rikku and Chef Warwick (and their super talented team behind them). After having had the set menu with wine pairing for dinner, my fiancé and I were completely blown away (again) to say the least. These chefs are absolute masterminds and the way that they conceptualise food and wine, astounds us. We highly recommend SŸN @ 47 - not only is it one of our favourite places, but you're guaranteed an absolutely magical experience. We cannot wait to go back!

  • This is our 3rd Bree Street Restaurant visit. We dined at Grub & Vine last week and had an amazing meal and it was there we heard of this new place further down the road. We read the reviews above and thought it might not be worth the risk as the menu looks quite pricey, but my wife convinced me to at least try it... And this is what happened... What a superb wine list, 240 plus even of some rare and amazing gems from both South Africa and globally. Truly impressive and the Chef picks them him self! They had ran out of a couple of the cheapest options, but that isn’t the sort of wine we were looking for anyway, I did want the Petrus, but I saw the mist in the wife’s eyes why I was even thinking of suggesting it. It all started with a plant pot with a tree that had actual leaves fossilized in the middle of a shard of see through potato. We knew it was going to be an experience then! What looked like a cigar and an ashtray came next, in my opinion one of the most innovative, well presented and best tasting dishes I’ve ever eaten, and everyone else agreed. The Scallop?!!! I’m not going to ruin the surprise, but just wow. Mind blowing. The chef comes out to describe this course which made it all the more delightful, as you can hear and see the passion in his voice and he truly knows his wines, but I guess you’d expect that from a World Restaurant Award winner of Best Chef and from a Michelin background who has worked at some of the worlds best restaurants. The meal carries on getting more entertaining and tasty. The ramen being so flavorful I couldn’t eat it all and the ‘syringe noodle’ was nice but I’d of preferred normal noodles, but it was major fun and very clever. We were truly blown away by dessert, green tea, porcini mushrooms and chocolate? To much to mention, to much amazing wine and the wine pairing is super premium, something I haven’t seen before. Our waiter Neveil was amazing, couldn’t of asked for better. Interesting cocktails too! This is definitely a top 3 restaurant experience in South Africa, on par with Test Kitchen and La Colombe for sure, if not, better. What a find. Off to another new Cape Town spot tomorrow recommend by the chef him self.

  • A disappointing experience, served warm sparkling water on arrival , poor wine list, with many items out of stock. Food was very average. The pictures on their website and fb page didn’t represent what we received. Waiter didn’t know what the cocktails were. The worst was the way the responded to the review on their FB page, lashing out with a personal attack. Followed by removing the whole review section on their page. Give them a miss they are so many better restaurants in cape town.
