Jonkershuis is a firm favourite with my family. The vibe is relaxed (on occasions a bit too relaxed, but when you're having Sunday lunch, that's acceptable) and the fairly traditional food is hearty and delicious. The restaurant consists of a number of different eating locations - in summer it's best to be outside on the patio area; in winter, the inside section is super cosy; and for anytime in-between, the covered courtyard is a good bet. As far as the food goes, my favourite is the traditional Cape Malay curry, which comes with rice, poppadom, roti and sambals. It has a good balance of sweet and spicy. Often the specials board will have some sort of roast (lamb on the most recent occasion), which received a big thumbs up from my family. Leave space for dessert, because Jonkershuis does great versions of SA staples like malva pudding and melktert. It will indeed feel like having Sunday lunch with your family!

I live in SeaPoint and have driven all the way out to Constantia to have breakfast at Jonkershuis on numerous occasions. We used to do Airbnb with our one room in our appartment and whenever we had a guest staying for a while we would take them out to Groot Constantia. I've only ever been for breakfast and lunch and have never been disappointed. The setting is idyllic under the large trees with views down towards false bay over the vineyards. The coffees are great and the breakfasts spot on. I mostly have the Cape Malay food from the lunch menu which is always packed with flavour and ample in portion. This place can get crazy busy but the service always seems to be friendly and they are always on top of things. -Henry Smith

Jonkershuis, located on the Groot Constantia Estate, Cape Town South Africa have three different seating locations. You can either be seated outside overlooking the vineyards; this was a beautiful view. The day I visited it was a bit windy and moved inside. They also have a beautiful courtyard with people talking and enjoying their breakfast. The atmosphere throughout the entire restaurant was very relaxed, that with their vintage décor added some nostalgia to the experience, taking me back to a time when I was just a young girl, having a Sunday dinner at my grandparent's house. Their staff throughout the service was very professional and friendly. I enjoyed their coffee, accompanied with a rusk. The menu had a few good breakfast options, but I decided to ask the chef for his recommendation. My breakfast arrived, poached eggs on a toasted sourdough bread with bacon and a fried tomato. As I cut into the eggs, it was over cooked, and the waiter noticed it as well. Personally, I think the over cooked eggs should never have left the kitchen, but I guess even the best of chefs sometimes have an off day. They did replace it quickly and the second time around the eggs was cook perfectly. As I received the bill, I did notice that they removed the coffee from the bill, as a gesture to make up for breakfast. I appreciated it but did not feel right to have it for free as I was there to review the restaurant. My overall experience of the place was good, and with a few friends it makes for a great atmosphere, but I am not sure if I would go as far as to say I would make this my weekly breakfast spot.

This place is by far my favourite Eatery for Breakfast, Lunch or Dinner. The owners are so hands on and it shows from the service to the food. The food is always consistent with generous portions full of flavour. Each dish is always a masterpiece. They staff are super knowledgeable and friendly and the vibe is great. Whether you are going for a celebration, a chilled weekend breakfast or a romantic dinner, Jonkershuis is always a winner for family and friends.

When I think about lunch on a wine farm in the Constantia valley, I admittedly don't often think about Groot Constantia. A friend booked for lunch a few months ago and it was surprisingly lovely, so thought to try it again this last weekend. I don't often order fried fish and chips, but did so on both visits to Jonkershuis - it was that delicious and did not disappoint the second time. The soda-battered hake fillet (R110) is perfectly fried - crisp on the outside, leaving the fish itself firm and tasty; it is served with crispy fries and tartare sauce (which I must note I don't generally eat either, but this one is great!). The Groot Constantia Blanc de Noir is great for a sunny day, too. Tip when booking: the outside seating is far nicer than inside, which is very traditional / old-school.
