6 great fish tacos in SA

A post shared by Nancy Flint (@enflint) on

Prepare to salivate as you make your way through our list of great fish tacos around SA.

El Burro (Green Point and Newlands, Cape Town)

El Burro serves up a wide selection of taco options. Seafood fans will take comfort in the glorious line-fish version here. These beauties are served in your choice of flour or corn soft tortillas with all the trimmings. The main event – freshly caught line fish – is lightly battered and served with garlic, chilli and coriander. They’re the perfect partner for the fiesta of Mexican flavours.

Four15 (Durban North)

Durban’s own burrito bar has kicked things up a notch with its San-Fran-style taco offerings. Ocean-themed fillings include the Baja beer-battered hake with diced tomato, crunchy slaw, mixed cheese and a chilli-lime aioli. There’s also the Malibu shrimp option for shellfish fans. This is filled with cajun-grilled shrimp, slaw, avo and a salsa fresca.

The Great Eastern Food Bar (Melville, Johannesburg)

This new-style ramen bar offers an explosively delicious take on tacos. The plate of four is loaded with decent portions of fresh, tender trout ceviche and kicks of wasabi and pickled lemon in taco shells that are crisp and light, with a satisfying crack on the first bite. Pro tip: Don’t share. These are addictive.

The Joint Jazz Café (OR Tambo Parade, Durban)

This new shisa-nyama spot on the beachfront is serving up wholesome food accompanied by jazzy beach flair. The large flour tacos here are soft and jam-packed with flavour. Order the Zulu line fish version filled with crispy coconut snapper, fresh greens, avo and a glorious creamy dressing.

The Pot Luck Club (Woodstock, Cape Town)

Taking a messy street food like a taco to new culinary heights requires no little skill. The team in this glass box overlooking the harbour delivers the freshest and most delicate version of a fish taco imaginable on the ‘sour’ section of its menu. The plain description of the ingredients used for the tacos – ceviche, black-bean purée, avocado and sour cream – belies the depth of flavour and textures it delivers.

CTFM (Countrywide)

Cape Town Fish Market serves up their fish tacos with peppers, avo, tomatoes and a sweet mayo dressing. Choose between rainbow trout (R94), tuna (R98) and salmon (R114).
