5 great restaurants for banting pizzas in Joburg

Pizza is one of life’s greatest joys and, with eateries across the country embracing today’s diet trends, almost anyone can still get a fix of their favourite slice. For those who have taken the LCHF route, these banting pizzas are sure to satisfy those cravings. Offering bases of everything from cauliflower to golden flaxseed and psyllium husks, here are five spots for banting-friendly pizzas in Joburg.

CNR Café (Craighall Park)

Locals love this spot for its easy-going café fare and relaxing ambience. Banters can get their pizza fix here with crispy, thin bases made from psyllium husks and flaxseed for an extra R20. Order yours with springbok carpaccio, sliced tomato and crème fraîche; salami mozzarella and oregano; or chicken, coriander and chilli. There are also versions without mozzarella and topped off with the likes of prosciutto and artichokes.

Col’Cacchio (Hyde Park)

This pizza favourite caters for nearly all dietary needs. Look out for the B on the menu, which indicates a banting option. The LCHF pizzas, with a smaller base of 21cm, are made with cauliflower, coconut, flax seeds, psyllium husks and Himalayan rock salt. Toppings include options of mozzarella and herbs; jerk-spiced chicken, salsa and sour cream; or salami, black mushroom, green pepper and feta. All banting pizzas are served with a side salad of lettuce, carrots, cucumber, egg, parmesan and radish.

Fresh Earth Food Store and Café (Emmarentia)

This vegetarian and vegan supermarket and eatery serves up wholesome grub, including banting-friendly pizzas. The bases here are made using golden flaxseed flour, olive oil, psyllium husks, eggs and salt. These are then topped off with delicious options like mozzarella and tomato; basil pesto, spinach, Italian tofu and olives; and mozzarella, spinach and avocado.

Topo Gigio (Greenside)

Located in the trendy suburb of Greenside, this Italian eatery keeps locals happy with all things pizza and pasta. Low-carb eaters will be happy to know that the menu offers cauliflower bases for maximum enjoyment.
