Winter is here, meaning it’s time to pour yourself a questionably large glass of wine and hunker down next to a roaring fire. Warm your bones and eat well at these restaurants with fireplaces in the KZN Midlands, Drakensberg and surrounds.

Abingdon Wine Estate (Lions River)

If you’re looking for somewhere to stay warm and get lost in your own thoughts, this is definitely the spot. With three dedicated fireplaces and a seasonal menu, you’d be hard-pressed to find a reason to leave. Go for lunch on a Friday from 13:00 to 15:30 or on a Saturday from 11:30 to 15:00 and choose one of their harvest boards to munch on or choose a few options from their tapas menu to pair with their excellent wine.

Blueberry Café (Netherwood Farm)

This laid-back eatery offers stunning views, whether it’s a sunny or misty winter day. The restaurant boasts large windows with field vistas, but the warmth of the central fireplace will keep your toes toasty while your tuck into the farm-style fare.

Caversham Mill (Howick)

A stalwart in the Howick area, this cosy old restaurant offers beautiful views of the waterfall and has a wood-burning indoor fireplace for frosty days. The restaurant has real farmhouse charm and serves up some delicious, wholesome food, such as haddock pie, lamb knuckle chilindron, fresh trout and classic quiches.

Cleopatra Mountain Farmhouse (Drakensberg)

A winter’s trip to the Drakensberg is not complete without a visit to this warm, comfortable restaurant. Don’t forget to try the five-course dinner in which your host will talk you through every mouthful before you sit down to enjoy the feast. The chef strives to use only the freshest ingredients available to him, going into the garden to pick them moments before serving. Book a room at the hotel before heading for a fireside dinner.

Village at Yard 41 (Howick)

This family-style restaurant offers comfort food and warm cosy fireplaces for the perfect escape from those chilly winter days.  They have a mouthwatering selection of hearty meals to warm your belly and have just acquired their liquor license so you can sip on a glass of red by the roaring fire.

Hartford House (Mooi River)

Serving elegant and seasonal dishes, this old-fashioned manor house is a special treat for Midlands visitors. Enjoy the six-course tasting menu served at dinner time on the candlelit verandas available at Hartford House. The beautifully decorated rooms are lush, with regal fireplaces dotted throughout.

Il Postino Pizzeria (Dargle)

This Dargle restaurant is a great pizza pitstop for those meandering in the Midlands, with its bar and restaurant fireplaces. Book your table close to the warmth and enjoy tasty pizza options such as the Midlands Medley – topped with mozzarella, caramelised onion, camembert cheese and basil pesto – and the Alla Sud Africana with boerewors, biltong, onion and cherry tomatoes.

La Lampara (Lidgetton)

Take a relaxing trip to the Midlands and stop by this popular Tuscan-style restaurant for outstanding thin-crust pizzas and pastas to be enjoyed alongside the warm and roaring indoor fireplace.
