A slice of French Toast

French Toast, the stylish wine and tapas bar in the Cape Town city bowl, is celebrating its first anniversary this October.

To mark this special occasion, you can sip one of their selected local bubblies for just R20 a glass during the last week of the month. The celebrations from 24 to 29 October will peak with all red wines by the glass being offered at half price on Thursday 27 October; all whites by the glass at half price on Friday 28 October; and all tapas at half price on Saturday.

Just 12 months ago, an old city warehouse was transformed into a sophisticated venue reminiscent of Paris in the 1950s. Its studded leather couches, face-brick walls and understated furnishings give it a very Gallic bistro feel.

The bar is popular for its extensive list of 150 local and international wines – most of which are available by the glass – and delicious tapas like flat bread with caramelised onion, goat’s cheese and courgette; crispy aubergine fries; and white anchovy and tomato bruschetta. Saffron and prawn risotto and fritto misto are new additions, and fans of peri peri chicken livers will be glad to hear they’re back on the menu.

These eats are served along with the usual favourites of hot and cold tapas, charcuterie and made-to-order cheese platters, as well as desserts like churros con chocolate, semi fredo and, of course, French toast.

Apart from the anniversary celebrations, there’s also a R48 lunch special every day from 12 noon until 4pm. The choice of four meals changes often, but you can expect dishes like fresh line fish with a salad; pasta with tomato, chilli, basil and mozzarella; or an open sandwich with velvety bresaola made right on the premises.

And don’t forget the ongoing Monday promotion, which offers a 50% discount on all wines of R400 and less.
