Are you street smart when you eat out?

When you've just enjoyed a lovely meal at a restaurant, wouldn't you like to help those who will never have the opportunity to do so? StreetSmart is an international, not-for-profit organisation that enables you to do just that. The organisation raises money by partnering with the restaurant industry. In South Africa, StreetSmart currently benefits organisations that work with street children.

Participating restaurants display a StreetSmart card on their tables which informs patrons that a voluntary R5.00 donation will be added to their bill. Patrons can donate this amount, more or nothing at all, at their own discretion. Each cent raised will be donated to selected beneficiaries in that area.

During 2010, StreetSmart raised R1.3 million. Le Quartier Francais was the top fund raiser out of the 63 participating establishments, raising nearly R50 000 in total.

StreetSmart's goal is to gain the support of the most popular restaurants in all of South Africa's major metros. Currently, StreetSmart is only operating in the Western Cape, with the exception of one establishment in Gauteng. To find out if your favourite restaurant is StreetSmart, consult the list below.
