Beats and eats – restaurants that are serious about serving up good tunes in Durban

Musketeers Pub & Grill (Queensburgh)

Musketeers @ The German Club on Barham Road is as well known for its German food, breakfast staples and pizzas, as for its live music and karaoke. From Monday to Wednesday, diners can enjoy slow music in the day and rock ’n’ roll and classics later in the evening, beer mugs in hand. Thursday is karaoke night at Musketeers, while on Fridays, there is a live musician from 6pm onwards to enthrall patrons with a mix of jazz, pop, reggae, contemporary and old-school classics. On Saturday nights, Musketeers usually hosts live music shows or tribute shows. Patrons under 18 years are not allowed in the bar area, but there are no age restrictions for the restaurant. Reservations are recommended and can be made by calling 031 266 0836. Musketeers Pub & Grill is open from Monday to Sunday from 9am to 12am.

KuD’Ta

Located on Boatmans Road, KuD’Ta is a fusion grill lounge, known for its live music. With a menu that combines elements from different world cuisines, patrons can choose from a diverse spread that includes Mexican nachos, Durban curries and Portuguese-style chicken. As far as the live entertainment is concerned, on Thursdays, KuD’Ta hosts a karaoke night, while from Friday to Sunday, there is a mix of solo artists, live bands and DJs playing R&B and pop music. The venue also has a dance floor. After 9pm on weekends, patrons under 21 years are not permitted at KuD’Ta. Reservations are recommended for large groups and can be made online on the restaurant’s website or by calling 031 301 1650. KuD’Ta is open from Tuesday to Thursday from 8am to 10pm, on Friday and Saturday from 7am to 2am and on Sunday from 7am to 11pm.

Dukkah Restaurant & Bar (Florida Road)

Known for its upscale cocktail bar and luxuriant ambience, Dukkah Restaurant & Bar on Florida Road is the place to be to enjoy eclectic Northern African and Mediterranean cuisine and craft cocktails, accompanied by live music. Whilst tucking into exquisite pastas, grills, curries and more, patrons can listen to R&B, jazz and Afro tracks, with resident DJs playing from Friday to Sunday from 8pm to 12am. On Sundays from 4pm to 7pm, Dukkah hosts live music performances by local artists – most of whom are students from the University of KwaZulu-Natal. Children under seven years are not permitted in the restaurant in the evenings. Reservations can be made online through Dukkah’s website, on Dineplan, or by calling 031 271 3531. Dukkah Restaurant & Bar is open from Monday to Sunday from 11am to 12am.

Egagasini & Mondise MVG Underground (Durban Central)

Egagasini & Mondise MVG Underground on Gillespie Street, in the heart of central Durban, is popular with patrons for its traditional African food, as well as its live music that is played throughout the week. From Monday to Sunday from 6pm onwards, patrons can listen to DJs spin a mix of deep house, classics, commercial, pop, rock and hip-hop tracks and on Friday and Saturday, they can also shake a leg on the dance floor. Apart from braai platters and African food, diners can also enjoy pastas, pizzas, steaks, grills and more, accompanied by chilled beer, wine and cocktails. Patrons under 21 years are not permitted at the venue on Fridays and Saturdays. Reservations are recommended on Fridays and Saturdays and can be made by calling 079 539 3777. Egagasini & Mondise MVG Underground is open from Monday to Sunday from 10am to 3am.
