Where to eat in Durban’s arty suburb of Glenwood

With its tree-lined streets and colonial-style houses, the suburb of Glenwood in Durban offers a colourful array of coffee shops, pizzerias and breakfast hotspots with friendly and relaxed vibes. This is the kind of area where suburban foodies will see walls adorned in street art, or discover a quaint hidden gem that’s perfect for a quiet cup of some of Durban’s finest coffee. Here’s where to eat in the one of Durban’s oldest suburbs.

Afro’s Chicken

This is Durban street food at its best – a simple, limited chicken-based menu made using good-quality ingredients. Go for the tender grilled chicken strips and tjips (hand-cut, skin-on chips) with chilli sauce for an extra kick.

The Bean Green Coffee Roastery

The organic beans on offer here are Ethiopian, roasted in small batches on the premises and served as single origin or in blends like Bean Green signature. Enjoy the comforting crackle of the record player and sip on a perfect coffee paired with a triple-chocolate brownie.

The Glenwood Bakery

Chef-patron Adam Robinson is renowned for his incredibly delicious breads, which appear in different forms on a small but excellent quality menu. Their breakfasts are also exemplary, as are their pizza evenings.

Mooki Noodle Bar

This fun Durban noodle bar serves up some fresh and interesting dishes that are easy on the wallet but full of flavour. Try the comforting chicken, mushroom and mai fun noodle soup, which features crispy tempura-fried chicken floating on a mushroom-and-chicken broth with oyster sauce and rice noodles.

Parc

This sociable sidewalk café offers some creative all-day breakfasts (their Not-So eggs Benedict is glorious) along with daily soups and quiches in clever flavour combinations. Keep some space for one of their decadent milkshakes.

Savior Café

What started out as a hole-in-the-wall coffee-and-leather shop in Station Drive is now a hip hidden gem located in the leafy suburb of Glenwood. The coffee is damn good, plus you can expect to find an incredibly creamy baked cheesecake slice and great all-day brekkies.
