Food markets to visit in Gauteng this summer

Tis the season to be jolly, as we bring you the ultimate guide to some of the best regular markets and some special Christmas markets in Gauteng, so gather the troops and enjoy a day of fun, sun and variety.

Johannesburg

Fourways Farmers Market (Fourways)

Situated in the Modderfontein Reserve, the Fourways market makes for the perfect wedding location, or casual picnic spot. With a variety of vendors to visit, there is plenty of fresh produce and crafts to choose from. The market is open on Saturdays and Sundays from 8am to 5pm.

Rosebank Sunday Market (Rosebank)

The main pride of our country has got to be how diverse we truly are as a nation, and this is evident within our markets, where various cultures are experienced through food, design and even music. The Rosebank market offers guests this and so much more! You could also be part of their monthly car boot sale – who knows what wanders you might discover. The market is open every Sunday from 9am to 4pm.

The Linden Market (Randburg)

Fashion, jewellery, art, live entertainment, activities for the kids, craft beer and food trucks are only but a few things to discover at The Linden Market. Bring the family and spend some time, and money, on the best local produce Randburg has to offer. The market is open on Saturday 26 November as well as Sunday 27 November at The Botanical Gardens, Emmarentia from 9am to 4.30pm. Early bird tickets are available at R30 per person and kids under the age of 12 years old may enter for free.

Field Market (Sandton)

An open air market, this makes for the perfect family, or friend, excursion on a Saturday. Taste and see what local vendors have to offer. Camping chair and picnic blankets are more than welcome. Guests are advised to not bring along any snacks that have not been purchased at the market. Your furry friends are more than welcome to tag along, provided they’re kept safe on a leash. The facility is also wheelchair-friendly and no entry fee is required to visit the market.  The Field Market is open every 2nd Saturday of the month from 9am to 3pm.

Market on Main (Johannesburg CBD)

Started in 2011, the Market on Main is still a big neighbourhood favourite. They operate at various locations within Jozi, so be sure to keep a close eye on their Facebook page for updated info.  Sip on freshly made smoothies, taste delicious dim sum, or try on some local fashion; at Market on Main, you’re sure to find your reason to return. The market is open on Saturdays and Sundays from 10am to 3pm.

Panorama Flea Market (Mulbarton)

A former drive-in movie theatre now turned to a market, The Panorama Flea Market has much on offer. They’ve got a “fun house” on site for the kids – an adult supervised entertainment centre, so that mom, dad, gran, grandpa and the older siblings can roam around and explore the various stalls available. Worried you might miss a game on the sports channel? No need to fret, they also boast a big screen TV in the beer garden where you can kick back, chill and keep score. The market is open every weekend from 9am to 4pm.

The Bedfordview Night Market (Bedfordview)

Aromas of spicy paella, smokey ribs, beautiful burgers, cold cocktails and much more fill the air at this night market. They come complete with live entertainment and a ‘kids corner’ for the bambinos. The market is open on Friday nights from 5pm to 10pm and there’s an entry fee of R20 per person while kids under 12 are more than welcome to enter for free.

The Bryanston Market (Bryanston)

From household cleaning items, to artisanal jams and produce, The Bryanston Market has got you covered! They offer stone crafting for the kids, and they have a designated play area for them too. For the adults, there are tons to be preoccupied by; whether you’re grabbing a delicious meal from one of the local vendors, or relaxing to the sounds from the local artists with a drink in hand, there’s something for everyone. Entry into the market is free and guests are encouraged to check out their website or social media pages for information on their Moonlight Market and more. The market is open from Thursday to Saturday from 9am to 3pm and from 8.30am to 3.30pm on Sundays.

Weekend Market JHB (Johannesburg South)

The Playground (Braamfontein)

At The Playground Market, every month brings you a different offering to choose from. The vendors aren’t always the same, but the energy and vibe remains. Established in 2014, the LoCrate Market is a space in which vendors and creatives can come together and showcase their skills. From musicians and artists to designers and chefs, everyone’s got a place at the LoCrate Market, especially the guests. Stop by and indulge in what’s on offer and be sure to linger a while longer and be serenaded by the live acoustics. The market takes place on the first Sunday of every month from 10am to 5pm.

Hazel Food Market (Lynnwood)

Looking for fresh meats, dairy products, fruit and veg, or just a relaxed Saturday morning filled with activities for you and the kids? The Hazel Food Market is indeed the place to be. Stockists of the most delicious artisanal sources and spreads, freshly baked breads and your favourite cut of meat, here you’re in for a definite treat. Lavender Kontrei Mark (Onderstepoort)

Looking for a fun outing in a rural setting? Then the Lavender Kontrei Mark might be a fun excursion to enjoy. It happens every Saturday, from 8am till 2pm. Find the market grounds at 106 Apache Road, Onderstepoort (just behind Obaro, Wonderboom).Register for “My Run” a scenic 2.5 km or 5km run in the morning. All this excercise can work up an appetite…

Enjoy a picnic or eat at the on-site restaurant. Pony and train rides for the kids are great for photos. Shopping at a traditional farmer’s market is fun. Select fresh produce, meat, olive oil, cheese and preserves direct from the farm to your table. Cool down with a craft beer or a gin while listening to live entertainment.

Pretoria Vintage and Decor Show and My Thrift Fair (Groenkloof)

Look out for Pretoria’s biggest vintage and collectables market. This is a wonderful place to awaken an interest in memorabilia, to collect antique jewelry, discover a passion for unique vintage clothing,  or pretty decor items. You can also grow your collections or find a handsome piece of furniture for that special space in your home.

The CBC Old Boys Club grounds are perfect for hosting this big event. Stall keepers from all over Gauteng put their best foot forward to make this market enjoyable for everyone. There are also many great food and snack options on offer.
