Fresh flavours: Celebrating the country’s new restaurants

The Eat Out Best New Restaurant Special Award recognises establishments that represent the cutting edge of South African dining. This accolade celebrates restaurants that showcase menus underpinned by flavour and creativity, demonstrating bold approaches to ingredients, techniques and presentation, as well as an interior design that harmonises with the menu, creating an atmosphere and level of service that enhances the overall experience. The award honours establishments that demonstrate attention to detail, originality and the ability to leave lasting impressions on diners.

Why new restaurants matter
Celebrating new establishments directly serves Eat Out’s mission of elevating South African dining by spotlighting emerging talent and innovative concepts that drive the industry forward. As Tessa Purdon, head of content at Eat Out, explains: “Eat Out’s mission has always been to champion South African restaurants, and new openings represent the evolution and innovation happening in our local dining scene. When we spotlight emerging concepts, we’re actively contributing to the growth and sophistication of our industry.”

New establishments serve as catalysts for culinary advancement, introducing fresh perspectives that elevate dining standards across the country. They provide platforms for emerging chefs, create employment opportunities and foster mentorship within the industry.

Expert perspectives on excellence
Tessa is excited by how new restaurants champion South Africa’s biodiversity. “I’m particularly excited by how so many new restaurants are celebrating SA’s unique biodiversity and indigenous ingredients. We’re seeing chefs work with forgotten grains, forage for local herbs and plants, and collaborate with farmers in ways that tell the wonderful story of our land on the plate. And as a farmer’s daughter, seeing these relationships form truly warms my heart.”

When trying new restaurants, Tessa has certain non-negotiables. “I look for restaurants that demonstrate excellence across every touchpoint of the dining experience. The foundation starts with the food – we want to see technical skill, creativity and a clear point of view. But equally important is consistency and the ability to deliver that vision reliably,” she says. “Good service is non-negotiable. I’m looking for teams that are knowledgeable, passionate and able to create genuine hospitality that isn’t rehearsed or robotic.”

Abigail Donnelly, Eat Out’s culinary director, emphasises the importance of new establishments in driving industry growth: “New restaurants and chefs introduce fresh flavours and help raise standards in the restaurant industry. They create opportunities to make the industry more diverse, while adding exciting options for the eating-out community. New restaurants often celebrate new chefs and concepts, uplifting the industry through job creation and mentorship opportunities.”

The Best New Restaurant Special Award represents Eat Out’s commitment to recognising authentic South African culinary talent while celebrating the diverse voices that shape our dining future – establishments that contribute meaningfully to South Africa’s evolving culinary story.
