Where to get a sizzling steak in Cape Town and surrounds

A glass of red wine and a perfect, juicy steak is the perfect meal on a cooler day. That’s why we’ve rounded up a list of some of our favourite steakhouses in the Mother City and beyond.

Rare Grill (Kenilworth)

Exceptional steaks and a homely vibe complete with great music is what you can expect to find at this gem in Harfield Village. The beef is four weeks’ old and wet aged, so you know it’s good. Choose from a selection of classics cuts (sirloin, T-bone, rump, fillet) and enjoy it with perfectly crisp onion rings and chips.

The Fat Butcher (Stellenbosch)

This Winelands spot is every meat lover’s dream. Steaks range from the classic cuts such as sirloin to more interesting options, like The Grosvenor (fillet with foraged mushrooms, white truffle oil and black truffle). Each steak is served with a delicious marrow-filled bone and you can choose to add a sauce or extra sides at an additional cost. The truffle mushroom and slow-roasted garlic sauces come highly recommended.

Iron Steak & Bar (City Bowl)

For a good ole steak that won’t disappoint, Iron Steak is the place to be. Excellent service is paired with their flagship flat iron steak, delicious cocktails (and mocktails) and wine. They’re currently running a special where you can enjoy the steak with a side of Wagyu beef dripping fries for only R99.

Cattle Baron (various locations)

You can’t go wrong with a Cattle Baron – and they have branches all over the city so you can get your meat fix no matter where you are. The branches in Tokai, Tyger Waterfront and Paarl all come highly recommended. Signature steaks include the chateaubriand, the Madagascan pepper fillet and T-bone.

Hussar Grill (various locations)

Another steakhouse that has ventured into multiple suburbs within Cape Town is Hussar Grill. And no matter which Hussar Grill is your nearest, you’re guaranteed to love it. Their menu comes with an easy-to-understand guide for those who are new to the art of a grilled steak and you can also choose one of the house specialities. If you’re in the Norther suburbs, head to the branch in Durbanville for the Madagascan pepper fillet or Hollandse Biefstuk. Diners in the Southern suburbs won’t regret paying a visit to their Constantia branch and if you feel like a taking an afternoon drive, be sure to end up at their Franschhoek spot.

Nelson’s Eye (Gardens)

This is a Cape Town institution that is still serving some of the best steaks in town, more than a decade later! It’s a traditional steakhouse where the meat is truly allowed to shine. If you prefer your steak with a sauce, however, freshly prepared sauces are made to order. All grills come served with root vegetables and creamed spinach plus your choice of starch.

Cowboys & Cooks (De Waterkant and Sunset Beach)

Enjoy grass-fed beef with baked potato or French fries. Choose a classic cut with a delicious sauce or butter to amp it up (try the truffle mushroom sauce, café de Paris butter or blue cheese sauce), or opt for one of the house specialities. There’s a sublime ostrich steak with citrus reduction, chateaubriand with béarnaise sauce and a pepper-encrusted flambéed fillet – all of which will satisfy your carnivore cravings.
