5 healthy restaurants in Durban

Brought to you by Greenis Smart Power Blender

Whether you’re looking to eat your five a day, cut out something, or just reduce the impact your diet has on the planet, we’ve rounded up eight great restaurants that focus on healthy food in some form or another. Here’s where to eat a little bit healthier this year.

Conscious Café (Hillcrest)

Located at the Castle on Main, this vegan eatery serves local, organic vegan and vegetarian food with the environment in mind  (you won’t find a plastic straw in sight). Go for an all-day breakfast with options like the Vegan Benedict, featuring a potato rösti topped with sautéed spinach, falafels and tahini sauce. Wraps and open sandwiches are all made in-house using non-GMO stoneground flour, and are filled with options like pea-and-basil pesto with avo slices; roasted veggies and creamy hummus; or the famed falafels with chopped salsa and home-made pickles. End on a vegan chocolate brownie.

The Digs Kitchen (Morningside)

This spot is designed for daytime dining with all-day breakfasts, healthy lunches and happy-hour coffee specials. The menu features the likes of corn-and-zucchini fritters with salsa and smoked salmon; wholesome bowls filled with Asian-style chicken, lentils, or burrito salads; and rustic open sarmies made with 100% rye or wholewheat potato-and-rosemary bread. There are also superfood lattes, Dilmah teas and coffees from KZN’s Terbodore Coffee.

Earthmother Organic (Glenwood)

Vegan, organic and gluten-free options abound at this breakfast-and-lunch spot. Try one of the fresh fruit salads or raw oats bowls for breakfast, or head over for lunch and enjoy gluten-free spaghetti with vegan pesto, spicy beans with vegan nut cheese, or a vegan salad bowl with falafels and raw veg. There are also quesadillas filled with roasted veggies and beans, or olives, cherry tomatoes and vegan cheese. Refreshments include fresh juices and superfood smoothies made with the likes of banana, almonds, brazil nuts, coconut oil and raw cocoa. End off on a vegan granadilla cheesecake.

Nouriti (La Lucia and Umhlanga)

Fans of all things healthy will know well acquainted with the wholesome eats at Nouriti in La Lucia Mall and Umhlanga. Perfect for nourishing on-the-go eats and nutritious sit-down meals, the menu features high-protein breakfasts; generously filled sandwiches, salads, wraps and baked potatoes; build-your-own fitness meals; and nutritious power bowls comprising everything from courgette noodles to bulgar wheat. Wash it all down with cold-pressed juices, kombucha or delicious coffees by Father Coffee.

Wholesome with Out to Lunch (around Durban)

This mobile plant-based food bar can be spotted at markets and events around the city. There are also plans to open a café in the near future, but in the meantime you can catch them at the Shongweni Farmer’s Market every Saturday and the I Heart Market. What to order? Pulled jackfruit buns with guac slaw and jackfruit curry; Mediterranean meze bowls with dolmades, aubergines, falafels and hummus; protein-packed wraps with smoky refried quinoa and tomato rice; and raw Ferrero Rocher tarts for dessert.

Eat Out does not endorse any particular eating plan. We just want to help you find tasty food that helps you stick to your goals. Consult a doctor before making drastic diet changes.
