Whatever you may call it, bubbly, sparkles, sprankel, MCC or brut, this effervescent wine is a staple for the festive season, pairing perfectly with any occasion – and any meal. To inspire you, here are six local méthode cap classiques to sip on at your next dinner.
When it comes to affordable drinks, popping bubbly doesn’t usually spring to mind. But if the mood hits, the Simonsig Kaapse Vonkel Brut Rosé is an ideal bottle for a tighter budget. The elegant bubbly is reasonably priced at R125 (cellar door) and has a delicious aroma of red berries and strawberries.
Boschendal’s Brut Rosé is a thoroughly stylish way to drink pink. After pressing the red grapes, the juice is bled off immediately and blended with chardonnay, which makes for a beautiful sunset, salmon colour. It’s great for any occasion – and was quaffed by everyone at the 2016 Eat Out Mercedes-Benz Restaurant Awards. (Psst: we heard a rumour that you’ll be able to win some. Keep an eye on our 21 Days of Winning calendar!)
The glamorous Silverthorn Jewel Box is a dazzling bottle to pop open for celebrations. Inspired by stargazing in South Africa, the 60% chardonnay and 40% pinot noir brut blend costs around R270 a bottle and will go perfectly with your favourite mushroom dish.
At R595 a bottle, Graham Beck Cuvée Clive is a serious spoiling for someone special. With Pieter ‘Bubbles’ Ferreira behind the wine making, the prestigious cap classique has a reputation of being one of the finest around. It’s produced only in vintages of exceptional qualities from the two classic varietals of chardonnay and pinot noir, and is deliciously versatile with food.
The Chevallerie Filia 2013, a bottle-fermented sparkling wine, is crafted with inspiration from méthode traditionnelle and utilises 100% chenin blanc grapes from Nuwedam in the Swartland. It’s a real talking piece and a great gem if you’re wanting to impress other wine connoisseurs. (R350 a bottle)
Babylonstoren Sprankel (Afrikaans for sparkle or bubbly) is not only delicious, it’s extremely easy on the eye, too. The 100% chardonnay MCC offers classic notes of biscuit and brioche that are countered by fresh apple and lime flavours. Perfect for summer sipping, it goes for R495 at cellar-door price.
