Review: Monster burgers and fresh juices at Iewers Nice in Westdene

The menu of Iewers Nice in Westdene, Bloemfontein, offers a wide range of dishes, some quite creative.

Food

Iewers Nice offers a remarkably wide range of dishes – to the point that you struggle to work through the long menu (partly because of all the interesting pencil drawings and some really funny quotes).

The light lunch options include quiches, salads and sandwiches. In the quiche section, the Cajun chicken with cranberries and almonds seems like a good choice. The tortellini salad with lettuce, rosa tomatoes, red onions, boiled egg and rookworst (a Dutch sausage) is delicious, and you have the option to add artichoke to the already impressive list of ingredients.

On the sandwiches side, we liked the look of the prego chicken liver sarmie. If you go hungry, the gourmet beef and chicken burger should be yours; it’s as tall as a Bloem skyscraper. Give credit where it’s due – this kitchen produces a lot of creative concoctions.

Drinks

Lacking an official wine list, the restaurant prefers to have a “wine of the week or even month”, where they support one or two specific wineries and sell only their wines. We were lucky enough to be there when the choice befell Groote Post Vineyards near Darling.

Service

The waiters are friendly and fast, even during the very busy lunch hour.

Ambience

The name means “somewhere nice”, which certainly befits the place – it is indeed a nice spot to meet a friend for a quick lunch. It’s a fun space with quirky touches everywhere. The informal little café, albeit quite busy decor-wise, will lift your spirits.

And…

Do try the freshly squeezed spinach, pineapple and kiwi juice.
