This is South Africa’s first specialty coffee drive-thru

If you love great coffee but are always on the run, the new Vintage Coffee spot in Midrand, Gauteng, might just be the ideal compromise. Pull up to the trendy container just off busy Main Road and get a good-quality flat white or iced coffee handed straight into your car.

While there are other drive-throughs in the country that serve coffee – including the recently launched Mugg and Bean Move Thru – this is the first focusing on specialty coffee, according to co-founder Kevin Clark. Specialty coffee is an international classification that refers to beans that score 80 or more points on a 100-point scale. Vintage offers two blends, both in this category, with their espresso-based drinks made with their Pedlars Blend of Tanzanian and Brazilian origin, and a single-origin bean for the batch coffee option.

This is the third location for Vintage, after their original store in Centurion and their Menlo Park location (now closed). The rest of the container building has all the normal hallmarks of a classic coffee shop, with outside and inside tables and WiFi. Clark calls this “a hybrid of a mobile coffee set-up and store”.

The menu is short and simple, but if you need a snack with your convenient caffeine, there are a couple of baked goods and two grilled-cheese bun options, with everything built for eating in the car if you’re in a rush.

If the concept proves popular, Clark hopes to roll out other similar drive-throughs in business parks and the like. For the more immediate future at the Midrand location, though, the Vintage team has another novel idea: two reusable cups featuring name labels. “You trade out in the morning,” Clark explains. “You give us your dirty one, we wash it and we give you one with coffee in it.”

With a tidy intersection of sustainability, convenience and speed (their current best time is two cappuccinos in one minute and 33 seconds), Midrand’s Vintage Coffee drive-through might just be the perfect addition to your morning commute.
