The final countdown to the 2013 Restaurant Awards

With only four more days to go before we announce the top chefs in South Africa at the 2013 Eat Out DStv Food Network Restaurant awards, I have not much else on my mind than our final preparations for the big night.

It’s going to be bigger than ever before. This year, The Lookout venue at the V&A Waterfront will be filled with 500 food enthusiasts, chefs and restaurateurs.

Without giving too much away, I received photographs yesterday of someone working inside a cold room with a chisel or two. The office is buzzing and a few glasses of bubbles have been consumed between some crazy-busy organisation. It’s going to be the best Sunday carvery ever!

Here’s: the line-up:

  • Nobu is on canapés.
  • George Jardine from Jordan Restaurant is preparing the starter.
  • Then we go into our first main by Jackie Cameron, who’s bringing her team down from Hartford House in the Midlands.
  • The chef responsible for the second main is Chris Erasmus from Pierneef à La Motte.
  • Dessert is shared by David Higgs and pastry chef Minette Smith, who are coming down from Five Hundred in Johannesburg, and Peter Tempelhoff and pastry chef Amy Young from The Greenhouse.
  • The meal will end with a celebration surprise from Tanja Kruger, chef at Makaron.
  • And, of course, there will be a few hidden surprises. Good luck to all the nominees and to our cooking heroes.
