The Good Food & Wine Show comes to Jozi

With more than 100 000 annual visitors countrywide, the Good Food & Wine Show promises to be a showstopper in Johannesburg this month, offering something for everyone’s appetite.

International celebrity chefs, the likes of Gordon Ramsay and the Masterchef Australia winner, Adam Liaw (check out his Gong Pao chicken recipe on our sister site Eat In), will be among the high-profile guests in attendance. The Samsung Chefs in Action series provides a stage for these international experts to entertain audiences with their skills.

A brand new Huletts Baking Theatre will be launched this year, focusing on baking, patisserie and desserts. Also offering a hands-on experience is Get Fresh with BBC Lifestyle. Here everyday foodies will chop, whisk and pour alongside a world-class gourmand and discover some of their cooking secrets.

In the Lindt Chocolate master-classes (yes, dreams do come true), the luxury brand’s master chocolatier will guide chocoholics through seven different types of Lindt. And if this didn’t sound tempting enough, each contestant will also get a Lindt goodie bag to take away.

For some hot flairing action, watch the tricks and antics of the Joburg contestants for the National Cocktail Championships, the winner of which will be flown to Cape Town to participate in the national finals and, potentially, the World Bartending Championships 2012.

Lovers of high-end tipple will appreciate the offerings at wine tastings, the Oude Meester Music Lounge, Conjure Cognac Lounge and Johnnie Walker Whisky Tastings, while avid diners can distract themselves with the Tastes of the City. This feature offers the chance to sample the fare of a long list of Jozi’s finest hot spots, as well as read menus, meet owners and chefs, and try their signature dishes.

Upping the ante in a major way, the Maserati Lounge displays the latest beauties for sports car enthusiasts to admire – but only the celeb chefs are lucky enough to be chauffeured around the city in one.

And for something a little more rustic, especially over the weekend of Braai Day, the Amarula Outdoor Theatre will host cooking demonstrations on a state-of-the-art Weber braai to show visitors the luxurious side of the great outdoors.

Entrance to the Good Food & Wine show is R80 for adults and R50 for pensioners and children, but remember to book for the Samsung Chefs in Action Theatre and wine tastings through Computicket. Workshop spots, which are expected to sell out, can be reserved through Tyron on bookings@gourmetsa.com or 021 702 2280. (Prices vary.)
