The Good Food & Wine Show: Eat Out’s top picks

While news of Coldplay heading to the country has musos excited, another British superstar has Cape Town foodies jumpy with excitement. Heston Blumenthal is making his first official appearance in the country this month, for the Good Food & Wine Show, and tickets are being snapped up fast. With the Cape Town event fast approaching, from the 26-29 May, we round up Eat Out’s picks of the show.

Owner of the Michelin-starred Fat Duck, and star of television shows ‘In Search of Perfection’ and ‘Kitchen Chemistry’, Heston Blumenthal’s live demonstrations at the Samsung Chefs in Action Thearte are likely to sell out very soon. This is far from Heston’s first trip to the country – with a Zimbabwean father, who was educated in the Cape – the molecular gastronomist first came to the country as a teenager, and actually considered setting up a restaurant in Franschhoek in 1992.

Dessert king, James Martin, recently voted one of the top three chefs in the world and author of the new book Masterclass will also be presenting demonstrations in the Chef’s in Action Thearte, as will Atul Kochhar, star of Great British Menus and patron of Mayfair’s Michelin-starred Benares. Both Athul and James are also offering hands-on workshops with no more than twelve other visitors at a time. James’ workshop is already fully booked, so you’ll need to move fast if you want to join one of the others, offered by Jonathan Daddia of MasterChef Australia and local boys Bertus Basson of Overture, George Jardine of Jordan and Christian Campbell of Delaire Graff.

The highlight of the Wellness and Sustainability demonstrations will be Londoner Celia Brookes Brown. The vegetarian chef and ‘New Urban Farmer’, will chat about sustainable farming practices and seasonal, local, wholesome food.

Other areas include a Little Cooks Zone led by Cbeebies Katy Ashworth, Come Dine with Us, where style gurus will share décor trends for dinner parties, the Amarula Outdoor Experience in association with Food Network, Weber and Tydstroom, showcasing five-star camping gear, and Taste of the Cape, where local restaurants Beluga, Bistro 1682, Bloemendal Estate Winehouse Restaurant, Blues Restaurant, Five Flies Restaurants & Bars and Le Franschoek Hotel & Spa will offer visitors a taste of their fare.

Entrance tickets to the show (R85) and bookings for the Chefs in Action Theatre and Wine Tastings can be bought through Computicket, while bookings for the Hand’s On Workshops, which are expected to sell out, must be made through Kate.
