Where to tuck into a pub lunch in Durban

An ice cold beer or cocktail paired with hearty pub grub can be one of the best meals of your life. Here’s where to go for fare like bangers and mash, steak pie and gravy, and more, if you’re in KwaZulu-Natal.

Connor’s Public House (Durban North)

Connor’s Public House is “The Home of Irish Spirit in Durban”, offering up a menu of truly classic pub favourites. Choose the classic bangers and mash for a simple yet satisfying lunch or go for a cottage pie topped with cheese and served with a side of your choice.  They have a variety of ice cold beers to wash down your meal and an “Irish for a Day” special every Thursday where you can choose a meal from their special menu that comes with a complimentary Guinness.

The George (Umhlanga)

The George is a true Durban institution that has stood the test of time. Whether you’re young or old, you can be sure to feel right at home with friendly staff and a great vibe. They’re known for their homemade pies, which are easily the best in Durban! A crowd favourite is their mouthwatering beef and Guinness pie. If a pie doesn’t tickle your fancy, choose their homemade lasagne served with salad or chips or go for the 200g steak, egg and chips.

Steak and Ale (Umhlanga)

If you’re looking for a lunch spot with tasty food, cold beer and a great vibe, you can count on Steak and Ale to deliver the goods. It’s a firm favourite with Umhlanga residents and is the perfect spot for a greasy Sunday lunch to cure that hangover. Their steak and ale pie is a classic or go for a standard beef or chicken burger. As the name suggests, they also offer a range of different steaks.

The Bierfassl Restaurant and Pub (Nottingham Road)

Established in 1999, this historic restaurant has been operating out of a railway building that was built by the Natal Government Railways in 1886. They offer a truly unique Austrian/Bavarian menu that gives their customers a memorable experience each and every time. They offer a selection of Notties draught craft beers, imported beers and the standard bottled beers. They have a range of Austrian dishes such as eisbein and bockwurst as well as meals for the slightly less adventurous like their tomahawk steak topped with fried onion and garlic butter.

Mulligan’s Pub (Durban North)

Located in the heart of Durban North, Mulligan’s brings you a true taste of Ireland. They have nine different tap beers on offer, including Guinness, as well as seven different television screens to choose from for those all-important sport matches. It’s the perfect place to gather with friends to watch the rugby, while indulging in their delicious pub grub. Options include chicken schnitzel with a sauce and side of your choice, classic bangers and mash topped with onion gravy and a side of veggies, or their Sunday roast that consists of two meat options, crispy potatoes, creamy spinach, butternut and more.

Waxy O’Connors (Sunningdale, Hillcrest and Westville)

Waxy’s was established in 2001 and now there are three different locations throughout KZN. They epitomise the classic Irish pub and are perfect for good food and a good time. They have a standard menu with a variety of options from gourmet burgers to a selection of pies as well as lighter options like their bacon and mozzarella wrap. Their selling point, however, is their pub lunch special, which runs from 11am to 3pm, Monday to Thursday, and gets you any meal on the special menu for only R95 served with a complimentary glass of Nederburg wine. Choose the chicken schnitzel served with sauce and chips or the cheese burger served on a toasted sesame bun with chips.
