“Hearing people shouting my name was about more than receiving that [award]… That for me was 10 years of hard work because I came from nothing and I really had to work hard. I had to do a lot of jobs to get where I am, and it’s just nice to be recognised.” 

Those are the words of Elton Damon, head sommelier at La Petite Colombe in Franschhoek, as he reflected on the moment his name was chanted by the audience after he was announced as the winner of the Eat Out Wine Service Award at this year’s Eat Out Woolworths Restaurant Awards. 

“If I can inspire someone with the same background, then I’ve done my job,” he continued. 

This award recognises a sommelier who brings an unwavering commitment to their craft, paired with exceptional wine knowledge. The recipient must be able to articulate with confidence and clarity why a wine complements a dish – and how it elevates the overall dining experience. Above all, they embody an open and curious mind in an ever-evolving world of wine.
