Where to eat on Durban’s North Coast

The smell of sunscreen and hot, steamy days, broken by the occasional thunderstorm… Summer time on the North Coast calls for light, summery dishes, airy decks, and sea views. Whether you’re heading to Ballito or Umhlanga this holiday season, here’s our guide to some of our favourite restaurants North of Durban.

Ballito

Al Pescatore
Sea views from the deck and Rose’s Bar One cheesecake are two of the drawcards here. Also on the menu: a good selection of seafood and pizzas.

La Fiamma
A large deck, sea views and white linen make this a slightly upmarket option for pizza, pasta and seafood.

Mo-Zam-Bik
A vibey, beach friendly restaurant, offering lip-smacking Portuguese food.

Located inside Sibaya Casino, Aqua offer fresh sushi and seafood options in an elegant, unusual environment. You can’t miss the giant cylindrical aquarium in the middle of the restaurant.

A fabulous Italian spot overlooking the sea. Home-made gnocchi, prawn risotto and a range of tasty antipasti, salads, fresh fish and tiramisu are some of the menu highlights.

Umhlanga

The Grill Room at Oyster Box
Arrive early for a sundowner on the terrace before tucking into top-class seafood and classic dishes at this swish yet intimate spot.

Ocean Terraces
Relax around the pool and enjoy the views while you tuck into breakfast, lunch or dinner. The restaurant mixes international favourites like mini cheeseburgers and fish and chips with a vast selection of curries.

Plaka
Tuck into Greek classics like kolokithakia (baby marrows and gruyere) or kleftico (lamb) and crispy, layered baklava in this light, airy restaurant.

tashas
Take a break from the Christmas shopping at this friendly, vibey spot located inside the Gateway shopping centre, and tuck into one of the tasty but light options.

Mount Edgecombe

Marco Paulo
A buzzing little bistro serving up gourmet pizzas (think gorgonzola, apple and bacon; or shrimp, chilli, ginger and coriander) and pastas. Committed owners make sure you’re taken care of.
