World’s chefs in SA to fight hunger

Chefs from around the world have turned the tables by committing themselves to raising money and awareness for the hungry. The biggest fundraising event ever in the global chef fraternity, the Bidvest World Chefs Tour Against Hunger takes place from 21 to 30 August, when more 250 chefs from 44 countries will touch down in the country. Although hailing from different backgrounds, all of them are united in their desire to alleviate suffering caused by starvation. The goal is to raise R5 million, which will feed 300 children every day for the next five years.

Dr Bill Gallagher of the South African Chefs Association said, “So far, the worldwide response to the tour has been nothing short of breathtaking.” The  project has evolved and grown, raising hopes of gathering a substantial amount of money to donate towards the children's organisations and feedings schemes.

The World Association of Chefs Societies, the South African Chefs Association, Bidvest and Southern Sun invite you to join hands with these chefs in their fundraising endeavours. Here’s how you can get involved:

• Book your seat at one of the three gala dinners, held at the Southern Sun in Durban on 25 August, Cape Town on 27 August and Johannesburg on 30 August. Tickets for Cape Town and Durban cost R395 per person, while the Johannesburg occasion includes a performance by PJ Powers and a cabaret show, for R750 per person.

• See top international chefs in action at demo kitchens and in food festivals at hotels and shopping centres around the country.

• Buy a chef's hat for R10 at any of the demonstrations to show your support of the fight against hunger.
