We had heard so much about the Lucky Store, maybe my expectations were too high. Ive always admired Judy and what she accomplished at the River Cafe so I couldnt wait to try the Lucky Store. The setting is superb. Loved the sweetie counter and even smoked a few candy cigarettes but we found the food disappointing. Starters were very ordinary. I had the beetroot and goats cheese tart - the cheeese was great but the rest was pretty much flavourless. The tomato soup was very tart with no depth of flavour. For mains I had the smoorsnoek which is not really smoorsnoek at all - more like flaked smoked snoek on potatoes. The waterblommetjie tart was ok but waterblommetjie bredie would have been better. That said, the desserts were absolutely amazing. The sago pudding alone was worth the trip and the flourless choc tart is unspeakably delicious. Overall I wouldnt rush out there again in a hurry.
